Trouser bottoms and bag straps

Hi, first post here. Could you assist me with the following. How were the bottom of Indys trousers finished in ROTLA? I meen did he have 'turn ups' or were the bottom of the trousers turned back on themselves and pressed flat?

Also I've seen mention of the correct strap for the ROTLA gas mask bag, although I can't find it. Could someone show / tell me how it should be, specs if possible, so I can go and get it made up. I'm also interested in how it attaches to the bag, a permanent 'rivit' or is it designed to be able to take on and off?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Raider,

If you go check the main site you'll find info on how the trousers are finished. A military style hem i believe. Also check there or other posts here for the strap. There are also lots of vendors round here that make the strap.

The pants are hemmed in a classic military style. I think I recall that the front part of the hem is one inch higher than the back, and the hem stitch is about four or five inches from the bottom. They hemmed Indy's a little higher than a normal military hem so that his pants wouldn't get caught on his 405s.

Scott, Thanks. I've tried searching but have gotten a bit overwelmed by the results returned. Are you able to 'narrow me down' a bit? Nibs, thanks to you too, if I were to print your explanation out would that be sufficient for someone who does clothes alteration to understand and get right? I'm not sure what you ment by the number either (so HF wouldn't get his caught on) Its a slow day for me.......

Well i got my bag strap from this guy

www.lost-ark.net

He's UK based but there are plenty US, Todds for example.

its pretty simple to make your own strap too, I looked into it but it worked out cheaper to buy one from someone else unless i was gonna make a few up. which i may still do after the holidays.

Rover Smith means for you to go to the MAIN IndyGear site (before you get to COW). Here's the link to the vendor list. Good place to start. There's also a "sticky" at the top of the fedoras section here at COW that is a VERY good thing to read if you're interested in purchasing a fedora.

http://indygear.com/igvendors.html

And here's the info on the main site regarding the pants:

http://www.indygear.com/igpants.html

Most straps come with something called Chicago screws which are removable.

yeah, suppose I wasnt particularly clear. Thanks for elaborating twilekjedi.

On the 405s, thats the type of shoe Ford wears in the films.

For the bag strap, you can go to toddscostumes.com. He sells the correct bag strap. There are other vendors as well, but many of us have Todd's strap and are happy with it.

As for the pants, you can find the specifics on www.indygear.com main page. The number that Nibs mentioned, "405" is a model number of boots. Harrison Ford wore Alden 405's for boots in all 4 movies. You will hear them on here referred to "Aldens" or "405s".

Unless you have an inside line to cheap leather and already own the tools to work the leather, you are best off just buying the MKVII strap from one of our vendors who frequent the site.

Todd does make a great strap, but after owning both of them I find that I prefer the one I purchased from Wade Egan. His stuff can be found at this site - http://homepage.mac.com/wadeegan/Wadeventure/

I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, since both vendors make a great product, it's just that the strap from Wade is of a little better quality leather. It's sturdier and, because I use my MKVII bag on a daily basis that is important to me. Todd's strap is far from being just a costume piece. It really is a respectable piece of equipment and would be suitable for daily use. I just prefer Wade's strap and thought to throw the option out there.

But I should also point out that the buckle from Todd's looks to be more SA (screen accurate), therefore what I have done is replace Wade's buckle with Todd's buckle.

The accepted method of attaching the strap to the bag is with a chicago screw so it can be removed easily. It wouldn't normally be riveted.

If you choose to get Wade's strap, I have an extra Todd's buckle.

I've checked the posts and the information at the front of the site but still have a question about the hem. I guess it's just my ignorance about the military style hem. Is the stitching parallel to the bottom of the hem or is is parallel to the ground? The bottom of the hem is angled down from front to back, correct?

Thanks,
Joe

I've sent Wade an email. Could you let me know the cost of the buckle and fast shipping to England (to arrive before Christmas). Please send me a PM. Thanks to you all for the info, and help. It is REALLY appreciated.

Personally, I don't like the Chicago screws and once I figured out the correct length, I brought my bag into a cobbler, who put a rivet where the screw was.

Rivets

I like the rivets best myself as well, especially on the buckle end. But for the Indy fan, it is key to be able to take the buckle on and off. On my personal straps, I have a rivet on the buckle attachment and the Chicago on the bag end attachment. That way I can remove the strap and put it on another bag if the need arises. Also, the ability to change the buckle is pretty handy, too.

I can make your straps with rivets or with Chicagos. It's your choice. :)

Well it seems I only really have the Chicago option as the bag is on it's way 'here' (well waiting for me when my jacket is finished) and you are 'there'. I assume if rivits are used you need the bag to attach it too at the time? How do you take it off later? Can you post a picture, and which way is screen acurate?

Posted: Mon Dec 08, 2008 4:17 pm
by maboot38
Yes, you need the bag before you can rivet the strap.

The strap is not meant to go off and on. Once it is on, it is meant to stay that way, although the rivet can be removed with a screwdriver.

Plain or edge creased, which one is ROTLA SA?

The Raiders strap is the one with the grooves along the edges.

You're very welcome. And welcome to COW!! :)

P.S. The buckle you'll want for the Raiders strap is the flat, square slider one, not the roller one.

Welcome aboard, Raider Of The Lost Ark!

I just had Wade make me two Raiders straps and I couldn't be happier with the product. He seems to get the right color- not too red, not too brown.

I asked him to do the grooves really lightly so that they're there if you want to see them which I think is quite accurate to what you see in the photos from the film. A lot of vendors appear to be making the grooves far too deeply.

Also- for the buckle- I'd recommend you get an AB buckle from K on the Run. By FAR the most accurate buckle available. It's a piece of laser cut steel. 8)

Pardon my ignorance 'AB'? I assume 'K on the run' is a member here?

Oh, and personally I'd always go with Chicago screws as you're likely to come across more and more accurate buckles as time goes on and you don't want to have to hack at the strap too much.

Hey conceited_ape,

I will be stitching my AB buckle on as theMechanic showed some time ago that this is screen acurate. I don't think a more acurate buckle will follow AB. I am also in the process of turning a rifle sling "button" on the lathe to use instead of a "chicago screw".

Hey Raider of...,

How much extra fabric do you have in the trouser hem? If there's not too much, when you turn them under, you can just slit the fabric at the front and back and hand stitch. This is how my nephew's pants were done in the army. His pants had a "military hem" and were, in fact, 1" (2.5 cm) higher in front than in the back of his pants hem. If you have much more than an inch or so (2-3 cm) then you must cut, sew, and rip a seam:

Pictures are from our own Kt Templar of screen used pants. Those pictures should tell a tailor all they need to know. Hope that helps.

Aha! So now I am learning something new, too. I've been wondering how the fabric would lie flat if there was that wide of a hem. Thanks, Dan. And I must say those screen used pants looks VERY screen used.

Did you copy your photos to www.photobucket.com? I recommend that. Once you have copied your photos, click "edit photos", select "resize", and in the "Preset Sizes" dropdown, select "Large" or "Medium".

When you get back to your main page, you will see all your images displayed. As you hover your mouse over each one, you should see a box below it display different URLs (strings of characters that tell the computer where to look in the internet for the image). All you have to do is click on the white box labeled "Direct Link", and you should see a little yellow box that says "Copied".

Now come back here to COW, and Post a reply. Click the "Img" button, then hold down Ctrl and hit "v". That should paste that character string that looks something like this: "http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo12 ... C_0003.jpg". Then hit "Img*". Now your image is embedded. Click preview to make sure it looks right to you, the click submit, and SHAZAAM, you've joined the 21st century!

Wested Indy Pants

Posted: Tue Jan 06, 2009 8:22 pm
by Kim Hoffman
I just received a pair of the I.Jones trousers from Wested. They're the real thing, but perhaps better. Cavalry twill. And good fit off the rack. Wested was very helpful in guiding me to the right size. Gemma was my contact, and very reliable.

As for the hem. The military hem is what Mr. Jones would have received in 1936, or had he been in the military. Nothing wrong with this hem, but it has more to do with mass production than style or any other purpose. Military tailors are generally dealing daily with hundreds of Class A uniforms and they simply save time just by folding the excess material in and then hemming it. Leaving out the scissors saves minutes.

Like most people I'm in-between sizes. Military pants are general cut so as to accommodate those in-betweeners and unless you have the perfect body nothing fits well. If one cares enough, off-base tailors will tweak the uniforms for a more exacting fit.

A post above, mentioned that one trouser leg was a tad longer than the other - that, my friend, is genuine military tailoring.

Also, I have read that during the making of the Jones movies, Ford had a number of trousers of varying lengths as to accommodate the needs dictated by the scripts.

Hi guys, I'm REALLY SORRY not to have posted pictures yet. My Christmass holiday dissapeared in the blink of an eye and between preparing for family etc. etc. I just plain forgot. I will make the effort to follow the steps, kindly provided above, and get something done. I'm OK to e-mail pictures though if anyone else can do it 'quicker'. That area of technology I have thankfully grasped already.
