I know I said in another post that I would most likely not make another nylon whip, but I missed the punishment of whip plaiting, so I went ahead and bought myself 300' of coyote brown paracord.

This weekend I (mostly) finished working on a stockwhip made from that paracord. Not a cow-whip, mind you, but a stockwhip with plaited keeper. I made it using the suggestions in the Edwards book on using pre-cut lace, and though I haven't had time to take it out for a test run yet, it looks pretty good. The only thing I'm not too happy about is the handle, which I made from an old broom handle, and I think it is a bit too thick. But since the handle is removable on a stockwhip I can always redo it later.

Has anyone else tried making a stockwhip like that out of paracord?

Yeah......I used a bit of tapered fibreglass rod for the handle though, 8plait then 12 plait over the top of it...I've never bothered doing them comercially though they are so time consuming I don't think you'd get the money for them....some guys are doing them thinner in an 8 plait...don't know if they are any good or not...this one performs just like a real stocky...Nice!!

That whip looks much nicer than the one I made.

I don't know what a "real" stockwhip feels like, since I have only ever handled whips I have made myself. Still, I'm looking forward to testing the whip this weekend.

**Real StockWhip** wasn't meant in any way as an insult, I meant exactly what I said, it handles like a Real (Leather) Stock Whip often the nylon stuff doesn't....

It's cool, Tony. I didn't think of your initial comment any other way. I was merely commenting that I don't have any experience from handling any whips other than the ones I have made myself, so I don't know what a proper stockwhip should feel like. When I start cracking my attempt at making one, I won't have the benefit of being able to compare how it handles to a how a proper stockwhip should handle. But as long as I can make it crack I'm happy.

I'm sure if your following the Ron Edwards books to make your whips and that they then crack they are just as real as anyone elses Nicholas

Here's a picture of my stockwhip. It's a 6 footer, 12 plait overlay with a flat plaited keeper. The fall hitch is the one called "George's Hitch" in Edwards' book. I still need to do the half plaiting on the handle, as well as a turk's head at the butt end.

Looks nice. Since you did not plait the handle at the bottom I would imagine that the broom handle will work for you. Unless it is too heavy.

I came home early today, so I took the whip out and tried it. I got it to crack loudly, but I think the handle may be a tad too heavy, and my technique is probably lacking with the longer handle because I didn't manage to get the coachman's crack to work. The slow figure eight took a while to get right too, but the overhead crack and the cattleman's crack were easy to do (as always). My arm is a little tired from the 15 minute session, though, and I think the handle is to blame.

I also tried the inner core strands from the paracord for the cracker, to see whether they would perform differently from the twine I normally use, and I didn't notice any difference, other than that the core strand cracker gets tangled around the thong more easily.

Keeper is made from two short 5plt wrist loops and it works well

Actually I've totally redesigned this now, I made another (didn't take pictures) that performed so much better, I have one to make for a fella in Germany middle to late January, I'll try and remember to post pictures, or even to take pictures would be good....

I recently decided to remake my stockwhip handle, and used a 10 mm diameter round wooden pole for the handle, and plaited black de-cored paracord on the handle. Here's a picture of how it turned out:



The whole handle is covered in cowtail plait, and then there's a second layer of diamond plaiting for the hand grip at the bottom. Turk's head knots made from coyote brown paracord like the thong.

I didn't have much paracord left to play with, so there are some gaps in the plaiting, but it will do for my purposes.

The thong is very stiff, so I'm starting to believe that I plait my nylon whips way too tight... Anyway, I took it out and cracked it today, and actually managed to pull off fast figure eights, slow figure eights, coachman's and cattleman's cracks, and of course overhead cracks. I also tried using my left hand, since I used one of my kangaroo hide bullwhips yesterday and was a bit sore in my right arm from that, and managed to pull off overhead cracks, cattleman's cracks and fast figure eights with my left hand, although I had to practice a lot to get the last one there to work... I also managed to whip myself in the face for the first time ever, using my left hand. Knocked my glasses clean off, but other than that, I didn't suffer any consequences.

Yeah, I know that the thong should be tightly plaited, but given that a nylon whip doesn't stretch or "break in" the way a leather whip does, I think I may be stuck with a very rigid thong on my nylon whips, and they don't exhibit the smooth flowing motion I see on various videos of nylon whips (Adam Winrich's videos for instance). When I let my nylon whips roll out, they stay curved. Like this:



The tip there is about a foot off the floor, and I had flicked it a couple of times to try to straighten the tip out. It will stay curved like that for a long time, unless I forcibly bend it to straighten it out, and then it will stay straight instead, until I coil the whip up.
