LOT #369
Harrison Ford signature “Indiana Jones” fedora hat from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
(Paramount, 1984) This iconic brown fedora personifies the Indiana Jones character and is one of the most recognizable pieces in modern film history. The hand made brown rabbit fur felt hat was made by London hat maker Herbert Johnson with appropriate gold maker’s stamp on the inside leather hat band. On the opposite temple are the gold stamped initials “IJ”. The hat exhibits slight studio soiling and comes with a signed letter from a former Herbert Johnson employee explaining the provenance and specifications of the hat, including how it was cut and shaped for the production. This is the first Indy hat we have ever handled. An incredible piece of film history.
It's going to be well out of my price range also selling the whip!

the ribbon is chocolate brown........per SAB's current offering...not the indy brown ribbon we've seen......also, what's with the tear-drop bash???....the village hat didn't even have a decent center crease....kinda looked like a crescent moon crease.
this auction smells fishy to me.

actually the crown is really short for a tod !
This is a hat made by swales, but not at all screenused, its one of the replicas he made, and looks very similar to the hat RNomura bought from him in 1988.... so alot of bull droppings to jack the price up.

find me a hat in TOD that has a chocolate ribbon on it. granted, the center dent could have been mistakenly rebashed with a tear drop but if this hat is the real deal, why would anyone change the ribbon out?

I edited my post, its a hat made by swales in the late 80's the movie hats wouldnt have IJ stamped inside....

BTW
I found you a tod hat with chocolate ribbon:
ITS the plane hat. Maybe we're not seeing it chocolate, but thats what it looks like to me:

i'll buy that one being a TOD hat, but not the last one.
this looks chocolate too due to the age and distressing:
we all know that it is not.
we also know that the TOD ribbon use to look like this:
http://www.theraider.net/showimage.php? ... ts/114.jpg
the profiles in history hat doesn't look like it's been through enough to age and fade that ribbon.
that's pure speculation of course and i'm not saying that this hat was never in the movie.......but if i had $80K to buy an authentic TOD hat, i'd be asking these questions prior to purchase.

Interesting. I might get the chance to go over to PIH to look at this hat. Not sure. One thing I note in the photograph of the hat from the BACK -
Look at how the ribbon reflects light on the right side of the picture. Leads me perhaps to believe that this ribbon is somewhat more shiny when clean, unlike a real IJ ribbon which is dull in light.
Ribbon could be a replacement on a real hat I guess.
And top bash could be changed too by rookies.

I have the feeling I know where this hat is from. If it's the one I'm talking about... well someone just sold it for $2000 and now is, as I predicted, on auction for 20 times that price as lower estimate. Too bad
I didn't buy it
Anyway if I had some money to spend I would buy Venkman's Ghostbusters jumpsuit

I need to sell a kidney in order to get half of the money that those guys are asking for!
I rather go and buy an AB (that hat would be definitively SA, original and of course it will fit my head).... ;-)
NOTE: I already bought an AB, I need to wait another 11 months haha.
Best Regards,
-Alfonso

also, i seem to recall that the standard crown bash for the indy hat out of SAB's shop was a tear-drop as well.
i believe this to be a fraud......just like the whip imo.
the sword looks legit.......but then again, i've never looked at it that close.

I thought screenused was supposed to have bought it but I have never heard from the seller again; shame, he was very nice. Anyway I warned him not to sell it for so little. Too bad. As I said,
I should have bought it but the miss said no
she's going to bash her head against the wall when I'll show her this auction
Indiana G, if it's the hat I was talking about (and I'm sure it is), I believe the origin is honest.
There is a reason why that bash is the way it is

Collecting original props is fun. But the sad fact is that if you don't go into the hobby well armed with knowledge, you are going to be eaten alive.
There are many, many fakes out there, making it extremely easy for a fool to part with his money. Potential buyers would have only themselves to blame for bidding on an item like this without doing as much research as possible beforehand, only to find out that it is not the real deal.
With less expensive items you can usually rely on the reputation of well-respected dealers, but even they are human and sometimes make mistakes.

I've known a couple of prop guys who have remade pieces or sold knock offs. To my knowledge they have sold them as reproductions and many of the ones I've seen were much better than the original. Up close it can be amazing how horrible some props are. Thanks to the OP for the link and wasn't there and wasn't there a jacket up for grabs lately?

They also have some great shots of the hero machete used by Jones...should the prop replicating guys be contacted?

So - what has been decided here? Can anyone match this hat up to any screen stills?
There can't be any "secrets" here unless somebody is trying to pull something.

that hat was probably lying in the junk pile with the pecan baron hats shipment.
it would probably be easier to re-enslave all those children to find the last 2 sankara stones than to correctly trace this sham of a hat back to a scene in the movie.
i'd like to see some major proof of this hat before i eat crow.

You know, that hat for auction MAY have been one of the Stetsons used in the film. One thing about ribbon, it can fade out over time. Even vintage ribbon will do that, as I have bought vintage hats with a faded ribbon. Fedora

Hey, Gang -
I don't know if I will have the time but if someone wealthy here was thinking of bidding on it I am acquainted with the folks at PIH and can go take a look at this thing - even maybe photograph it. But I'd only do this if someone was seriously interested.
I would LOVE to do it anyway but work schedule is tight right now.

but the hat has got HJ markings on her......
i don't believe that this is a TOD hat........the bullwhip that is also being auctioned is accompanied with the similar inconsistencies.

OK, checked out the photos at Profiles. The gold stamping inside the leather sweatband is identical to my hat. To me, this is more of a LC fedora than a ToD hat..
