Went for a hike today with the boy and mommy and when we got back to the car there was a guy in a pickup parked nearby unloading some mulch and I saw him looking at the hat. I went to put the boy in his carseat but my hat kept hitting the ceiling of the car so I took it off and put it on the roof. The boy was being cute so I tickled him for a minute, then got in the car and drove off. Got home, took the boy out of the car and went to put my hat on and... no hat.

Drove like a madman back to where we'd parked. It is just down the street from my firehouse, so I called one of my buddies there to see if he could go look for it. When I pulled up the guy in the pickup was still unloading mulch. "Hey, did you see my hat?"
"Yeah," he said, "I saw it rolling around the road but you'd already gone. I put it on that stump over there but two guys came by in an ambulance and took it."



Gave the guy some cash for lunch on me and went to the firehouse. My buddy said with a straight face, "Couldn't find it."
"Yer lyin," I said. "The guy told me you came by and got it." He laughed and took it out from behind the watch desk where he'd stashed it.

So after blowing off my car and rolling down a busy road, my Penman had no visible damage. It's not even dirty. The bash wasn't even disturbed. A testament to the strength and durable construction of Penman Hats.

It's good to be good, it's better to be lucky.

Don't you know not to take your helmet of when on a MVA. I guess old habits die hard. Why in the world would you do this with your hat?

I had a story like this with a FDNY rescue 1 ball cap. I was given a ball cap by the late Patrick O'keefe from Rescue 1. He was a good friend and I wore that hat down at my department when drill and training during probation period. During a late night of drilling. I lost my Rescue 1 hat. when we got back to the house the I couldn't find the hat and the guys packed the rig up and we went driving looking for it. After some time we found the hat just sitting in the middle of the street. I still have it but never wear it any more.

I lost a hat once. Wasn't an Indy hat though. I was going to Florida and when i was in the Marines a general had given me a General Dynamics Land Systems hat, they make the M1A1 Tank. So on the way down i stopped for lunch and forgot it there as i always take off my lid to dine. i stopped on the way home to see if someone turned it in, but no hope.

So someone in PA is rock'n a nice collectable ball cap from a USMC general. theives!

No the lesson is never take of your hat Lukewarmwater did what some firefighters do on MVA's. They take off their helmets to help work on people inside of cars and that a big no, no.

Never take off you helmet or your hat.
