New Horsehide Raiders - close enough?

Bought this Wested horse a couple of months ago and gave it a bath. (well, a run in the washing machine among other things.) Given the discussions re texture on the Nowak threads, I thought you guys may be interested in seeing how much of a drape and some patchy Raiders "dino-texturing" can be wrung out of the thickest of available hides.

Colours here are pretty accurate to the way it looks to the naked eye.

Thanks. Not really - I just requested "not tall" pockets and these are what I got - they aren't SA but I actually prefer them like this - the pointiness of the scalloping gives them a really old school look that I think works well. I tried to emphasise them on the edging when I distressed it.

I actually think that jacket looks more SA than many others. And there are shots where those pockets are pretty close - the start of the temple scene.

This makes me want my Wested HH to get here even more! What other distressing techniques did you use other than water?

This was a bit of a slippery slope for me. I first tried the rubbing alcohol which did nothing much, then thought bugger it and used acetone all over with cotton balls (2 really wet ones together at a time). Then I went around all the edges with the acetone really firmly but being careful not to overdo it. Then I sanded the edges and also some broader patches on the body to give a slow-worn effect. I then scuffed it up a bit on the inner brick walls of our apartment. Somewhere in there I poured boiling water on the collar, massaged it and pulled it forward by grabbing the collar to give it the right form.

Then my baby son puked on me early one morning. Didn't see it at first, but I was wearing it zipped up and he somehow managed to spew straight down the inside of the storm flap, and it nuked most of the zipper facings with baby formula!

At this point if thought "well, I'm just going to have to wash it then" and threw it in the washing machine on a full cycle. The weird thing was it come out like a massive, bloated wet sponge. Had to wring it out for a fair while and kept scrunching it all over (grabbing handfuls to encourage grain) I then hung it on the hanger you see over the towel twisted around it to bulk it out to avoid distorting the shoulders. Let it dry for a few hours and then wore it until I went to bed that night. By then it had really moulded itself well with all the wrinkles you see.

I do a fair bit of photography and often end up dragging myself over the ground to get a good shot, so we'll see where it goes from here.

To answer Strones, it's my first jacket so not sure where it fits in the colour scale - I think someone has said before that it is between dark brown and authentic? The acetone and the washing did give it the blacker, matt hue though.

I like that a lot, it has very pleasing proportions, especially the pockets.

Kinda a shame it's arriving just as summer is round the corner, eh!?

Wow, that looks great. Every picture like these is slowly changing my mind from getting a Last Crusade jacket to a Raiders Jacket.

To be honest after seeing those Queen Mary shots, I wish he'd bring me a Nowak! (My wife isn't likely to!)

Can't believe I'm saying this after all the work I put in but I'd entertain the right sort of offer to buy the HH.

I don't know. Based on the pics your jacket looks too incredible to consider letting it go. But I know what you're saying about the TN. I'm considering selling off a couple of my jackets that I said I would never sell so that I can get one myself. Financials aside, as my wife says, how many of these jackets can you actually own AND wear. I have my go to jacket and then the ones I wear because I feel guilty sometimes that I don't wear them.

I'll second everything. It's a great looking Wested. But that TN is the jacket equivalent of crack. I’ve got G&B jackets that I would never get rid of, but I am looking at some of my other possessions that maybe need to find new homes. I’d try to keep the Wested for now. Get your hands on a TN and then decide if you need to keep the Wested or not.

Yeah, I know - these are the issues I'm debating at the moment. I don't want to let it go, but posted a "make me an offer" listing in the Bazaar to see what happens. Then I started thinking about all my old "The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones" Comics, original Star Wars figures, etc. that I could sell.

So, re TN being Crack, yes, and I think Westeds definitely are a gateway drug!

Considering I just saw a few copies of the Marvel comic series at a local store going for $5 a pop, and no discount, you may want to honestly consider that route if they are just gathering dust....and don't let the grass grow under your feet. They're a hot commodity right now. Once the Indy fever dies down after Christmas, they may not be worth as much as they are right now.

I'd also recommend you keep the HH. The good ones easier to keep than replace! I can't tell you how many regrets I've had over the years with gear.

Regards! Michaelson

TN has to be the crack of jackets. I'm selling off some of my vintage action figures for my TN fund.

Ah, the madness... :o

Carded original Star Wars figures - check.
Original Raiders trading cards - check.
Temple of Doom hardcover comic adaption - check.
Boxed original Corgi Batman set - check.
Free set of steak knives - check.
:)
Actually, this may be an oddly cleansing process!

If it was me I'd keep the Wested. Yes the TN is nice but is it worth the money? Like my wife always tells me, better leave well enough alone. I'd say the HH is well enough.

Posted: Thu Nov 13, 2008 3:02 am
by Yojimbo Jones
Yeah - this is what I'm thinking. I've put the HH up on the Bazaar but I don't know that anyone's going to give me more than Wested's ticket price for it. If they do, then I will likely be tempted to give it to them.

But the more likely path that I'm following is to sell a bunch of my other memorabilia etc. It's not like the cost of a Wested could possibly cover a Nowak anyway, no matter how allegedly good the cut and distressing is!

I mean, I;m obsessive, but I'm not delusional! :[

Well, just keep in mind that as new as it is to you, it's still just a used jacket to the potential buyer, so don't expect more than you paid, or even break even unless someone REALLY wants it bad and not wait for their own custom...especially considering it's still a standard item sold by Wested. Just a word to the wise....

I've recently posted my Westeds as well on the Bazzar. I've never done that here, do people generally have luck with it? Or is that too broad of a question to ask... :[

Yes, they really do. Seems whips, hats and jackets (in that order) sell pretty well, if priced right of course.
Just keep those sales in the classified and not double post all over the site. ;-)

Good deal. Just keep the price in mind, as it also gives our newer members a chance to 'get in the game' with a good jacket at a decent price.

That's all that we ask.....give the new folks a chance.

Yeah - I agree. Put it this way - I wouldn't be upset if it didn't sell. I'm already rationalising... HH - winter jacket; TN lamb - summer jacket. Still 2 other seasons to work with too!

So this is how some of you boys end up with half a dozen jackets!
