I can't Afford a David Morgan Whip, so what is the best SA economical choice? I currently have a JRZ Joe's whip, so something in between?

Pagey whip would be the way to go. Most SA whip. Braided as fine as a Joe Strain with the ruggedness of a Morgan.

I think the first thing we should ask it what are you looking for in a whip and what is the most you are willing to spend. While I respect what Mr. Oak had to say, SA comes in many forms and from many makers. I'm told our own Bernardo Del Caprio has a fine SA whip as well. Or maybe seek out a second hand Morgan. There are some other fine makers of Indy whips as well.

How much are they? Where do I find them? What colors do they come in? I like the darker whips. Quality looks excellent and SA enough for me...

I own a Morgan bullwhip, and from seeing pics of a Del Caprio, I would be hard-pressed to tell them apart. It looks really, really good. If I couldn't afford a DM (and nowadays, who can?), that would be my vote.

P.S.- I just checked Morgan's website, and the description for the #455 series bullwhips now reads: Hand crafted at David Morgan, whereas in previous years it read: Hand crafted by David Morgan. Interesting.

Checking out his website, I learned that Del Carpio learned from Morgan himself, which makes his bullwhips pretty much second-to-none. And man, do they look fantastic. I actually envy that Last Crusade whip on his page!

Paul and Lauren at midwest whips have a 10 foot that's been "matured" in stock on their website http://midwestwhips.com/instockonsale.html. Most makers don't have their whips aged, you have to wait for them to do it on your own...so their 10 foot is a sweet deal if you wanted a darker whip.

So far these are the only makers I have ACTUALLY dealt with and own whips by... Yes i DO own a morgan, so thats my basis for comparison....
Morgans will always be the Iconic "brand" I think... but this day and age, there are some really talented guys and girls (like Lauren) out there that IMO can make you just as good, or BETTER whip for less $$$$$$

Even MR. Morgan was impressed with Pagey's work. I took one of Nick's whips for Mr. Morgan to try out. He had nothing but good things to say about his work. He said " he is way ahead of his craft."

HE didn't ask for options , he asked for opinions on most SA. I gave mine without debunking anyone's opinions.

Debunked is a pretty strong word there, and inapporiate as well. I don't see anyone saying Pagey, *WHO IS TAKING ORDERS, I do stand corrected on that point, my apologies to Whiskeyman* a lesser SA choice or a lesser whip in any way shape or form. If anything you debunked all the others by stating, "Pagey whip would be the way to go. Most SA whip. Braided as fine as a Joe Strain with the ruggedness of a Morgan." Most SA Whip. A statement, not an opinion. As right as all the other ones given on this board. And if we revisit the first post it is in fact looking for options. "What is the best economical choice?" Relax, No ones snubbing Whiskyman/Pagey/Nick. (Even if its true what i heard about him kicking kittens ) Most of the whip cracking members here just don’t have the experience with his whips to be able to recommend them based on real first hand knowledge.

jaq78 As far as a screen accurate Indy bullwhips go’s, I still say you would be hard pressed to top Bernardo Del Carpios Indy whips. No offence to anyone else but I’ve either owned, seen or used Indy whips by everyone mentioned thus far as well as several others who haven’t been, while they all make fine whips, Bernardo’s Indy bullwhip are still hands down the closest thing to the old Indy Morgan whips your going to find unless your lucky enough to find a Indy era David Morgan bullwhip for sale.

I suppose if you want Screen Accurate, I could also suggest a Terry Jacka Crystal Skull bullwhip www.theaustralianwhipco.com There is a long wait but if the exchange rate holds steady the 8ft would be a very good deal and you’d be getting an exact copy of the same whips Terry made for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Plus you don’t have to pay unit the whip is ready to ship out.

If you’re on a tighter budget of course, The Northern Whip Co’s budget Indy bullwhip, or even one of Gus’s whips might better suit you.

For what it may or may not be worth to you I don't think anyone is snubbing Pagey, this board is very Americanised so us European guys and the Australian guys are not as well known here as we are in our own market place....It's the same in reverse there are a fair few well known whipmakers here who are hardly known if know at all here in Europe...

I can't comment on a Pagey Whip as I've not handled one, even though he spent last summer but a few hundred yards from my workshop I'd of enjoyed it very much had we been aware of each other at the time if he'd popped round....maybe next time he visits his home town he'll visit me, I hope so.....

Here in Europe the import duty, VAT, carriage and the extra courier charge means we don't get to see a whole lot of whips made by most of the names mentioned above but I have seen and handled whips by Strain/Nolan and Delcarpio....

Backed into a corner and forced to make a choice I'd pick Nolan....

From what Ive read David hasnt been making whips for a couple years now so Its not really worth paying there high price if the man himself isnt making them anymore. I own a DelCarpio so thats where my advice is.Ive handled most of the top makers whips, even real Morgans. There all great whips it all comes down to personal preference.

My vote's for Paul Nolan at Mid West Whips. Amazing whips and you couldn't ask for a nicer guy to do business with or get whip advice (Lauren too). They also give a COW member discount.

As Hollywood pointed out, question your self on durability, performance, price, accuracy, and which movie style you are looking for.
And let me point out what should be the most obvious...use the search button. You are going to find threads upon threads of photos and reviews and debates. Members have made a wonderful thread at the top of the bullwhip forum for price comparisons and has a super handy area packed with photos of all the whip choices that you have.

+10000 My whip from Louie construction wise looks like a Morgan (for obvious reasons, he learned from DM!) and if anything looks like the plait is just a little tighter and neater.

And the price is right. I enjoy cracking it too!

Based on what I've seen in person, I'd have to go with a Pagey whip myself. I was blown away by G-Mann's Pagey whip. In fact, I thought it was a Morgan. I'm not at all thrilled about the stiffness of Joe Strains whips although some prefer that.

I'm most seriously considering either Bernardo's or Pagey's ROTA 8ft whips. I'll be at the QM summit next month, perhaps I can try out one of each from the members there,and see which I like performance-wise.

Good idea and in my opinion, the best way to go. I like your patience which some just don't have. I've never seen a Bernardo in person but would like to. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

"Yes, to agent5 you listen!" ;-) , Lack of patience has cost me a a fair amount of money when it comes to this hobby. I was a little to excited in the beginning and it cost me a Wested jacket that didn't fit properly, a very poor whip, and a few other minor purchases that if I had waited would have saved me some cash.

Before I got my Pagey, I was quite keen on getting a Bernado, at the time he couldn't take paypal and the whole Western Union thing gave me the heebie geebies.

I have G-mann to thank for helping me get this fantastic whip from Nick.

Bernardo's whips do look fantastic to this novice too though.

Im looking for a whip that is at the most, under 500 dollars...I would only use it for costume, I don't plan on cracking it, but I want it to look screen accurate. I also like the darker color of TOD and LC compared to ROTLA because it seems to match with the rest of the colors of the costume and not stick out so much......

what does Pagey's 10ft bullwhip - 370€ convert to US dollars? The other whips are great, but I cant afford what appears to be the $600 average for whips....

jaq, if you're looking for a SA costume piece, try Todd's Delux whip - he even changed the color from a burnt-orangey color to a MUCH darker brown (so I have seen from his website and from other members here). I love my Todd's whip and use it to learn from, because at first, I was only gonna use it as decoration - UNTIL I got it in my hands and the first thing I did was put on my Indy gear, threw in the LC soundtrack, and started cracking for nearly 2 hours on a hot summer's day. Now I got the itch, but not the means to buy another whip. Todd's whip is great as a belt-filler/prop and it is also good for a few cracks to "impress" your friends He also has a "prop-whip" which I believe is rubber and strictly for DECORATIVE purposes. Todd's is sold out..yes that would be the exact color and style I'd want, except I'd like to have the 10ft, but if the price is much more, 8 ft would be fine.

Pagey is me.
I do make darker whips, altough I usually make them in natural tan.
This is my own personal 8tf that I made in saddle tan (bottom) along with an old 10ft Morgan (top).

As for good Morgan substitutes - we have some excellent choices these days!! Mypersonal favourites are Bernardo del Carpio and Joe Strain becasue I have owned a couple of terrific whips from both. Paul Nolan would also be a great choice from what I've seen in photos.

Nick, I'm glade to see you popped in this thread. It's always good to see pics of your whips.

Yeah, Nick. Don't feel bad at all about patting yourself on the back. Your whips are amazing. In my opinion, just as good in terms of craftsmanship and much more fluid than any Strain I've seen in person.
