I am looking into getting one of the 2 and which of the 2 do you reccomend? It seemed to me that the basswhips were tighter and higher plaited. Any help would be great.

Although I cannot compare, I can comment on the basswhips.

When I walked into Indydawg's house, I had sat my Tim Bass 8ft Indy nylon with the other whips and proceeded with intros. Later on, after much discussion, we decided to go out and crack a few. As we gathered around the couch (where all the jackets and whips were laid out) to collect our whips, either Dale or Dakota said, "That's nylon?!" Until you're real close, it's hard to tell a visual difference unless you're purposefully looking for the difference.

Then, once outside, we were taking turns cracking the different whips--Bass, Stenhouse, Morgan. The one consistent comment from Dale, Indydawg, and (I'm pretty sure) Dakota was that the Bass whip was "tight." Now, keep in mind I had only cracked it for about 10 minutes (a month prior!) up to that point so that will give you some idea as to the newness factor when these comments were made.

Since then, I have cracked the whip for several additional hours. Even my wife can tell that the nylon whip is beginning to relax. Interestingly, it is relaxing progressively down the whip, from the handle, and making its way to the fall. But the last, maybe 18, inches of the thong are still quite stiff. This defies my logic since that is the area that gets the highest movement velocity during a crack. It doesn't affect my ability to crack it. In fact, my 11 year old son is cracking the whip with no problem.

Anyway, that's my experience and comments on my nylon whip from basswhips.

I don't know if you looked but western stage props has sweet nylon whips!!!! I just got my 8ft. nylon and all I can say is: I now know what "shock and awe" must have sounded like in Iraq!!!!! I must have cracked CONTINUOUSLY for 10minutes going through an endless loop of multiple cracks!! .....without stopping. And the whip didn't catch on itself once! Thet have an extreemly fast action and are very easy to crack! Anyway both of the whips look good but I would reccomend you get a nylon whip thats 8' or longer if your a beginner. If you were getting a leather whip, a 6footer would be fine. exp: I've noticed that an 8ft nylon would feel like a 6-7' leather whip. I've been cracking whips for 3 years (since I was 13) and when I 1st tried a nylon 6footer I almost killed myself and couldn't get very good cracks. Well I should stop before I start to ramble hope this helps...or something

I would have to agree with Scott (sab04). The WSP nylon whips are always in stock. They are really fun to crack. I have cracked quite a few of them and what can I say, they are simply fun.

Tim Bass and Rhett have my total respect. Tim Bass recently won a competition last fall in Dallas. I have cracked Tim's nylon whip and he is very good and very dedicated. Rhett has been king for quite awhile, but his backlog his huge, something like 4 to 6 months.

How's that for an answer? I guess for spending about a $100 these nylon whips are something. If you have patience, try Tim or Rhett. These two however, can make a nylon whip that looks like a leather whip. Their quality is that good. But the WSP nylon's are really good too, but they do look like a nylon. Krist King is the whip maker for WSP and he isn't chopped liver either. I guess it boils down to how you like the whip to look vs. how they crack. All the above crack real well.

Really? Was this at the Whip Weekend that was hosted by Whip Enthusiasts in Dallas? I was there and recall Robert Duke and another guy showing me a Bass whip that Tim had sent up to the competition with Robert, but I don't recall seeing/meeting Tim Bass. Or was the competition related to a judgement on quality on the whip and not skills? Just wanted to clarify my understanding.

Yes, there were whip cracking competitions and then there was a contest for best whip by category. Tim wasn't there, but he submitted his nylon whip. The whip making contest was broken down into categories; best bullwhip, best stockwhip and best nylon whip. Tim won the best nylon whip. I forget the other two category winners, but I can look it up.

Ah Sergei, that make sense...I was there on Saturday but on Sunday (when I was sick), they did the competition. Thanks for clearing that up.

Ok, I found the results from the last Dallas WE annual whip cracking contests. The results for best whips were:
- Janine Fraser won best stockwhips.
- Jerry Rasmussen won best bullwhip though by a slim margin over Bernie Wojcicki.
- Jerry Rasmussen also won best snakewhip.
- Best nylon whip went to Tim Bass

Again, these whips needed to be submitted by the whipmaker or their proxy. The surprise was Jerry. Relatively an unknown guy outside of Texas.

Is The Basswhip choclate nylon color the same as the whip colored choclate in that top picture? Is choclate the best look if i am going for the look of an aged indy whip?

I think either of those two colors would look right. My preference would be the light brown one. It looks so close to leather.

Whoo hoo...I got an email from Rhett today saying he'll soon be ready to start me a whip. I had forgot he had put me on a list to have a nylon bullwhip made...that was in October. So it's looking like he has about a 6 month waiting list.

I had mine made in chocolate and it looks like an aged brown. It doesn't look like what I would consider chocolate. Dakota Ellison, Indydawg, and whipwarrior please feel free to chime in and give your perceptions since y'all have seen it in person.

I had considered a lighter color ("tan") to simulate the natural tan but I quickly realized that my nylon whip won't 'get a tan' with exposure to the sun and use. So, I went for the brown color---I mean, "chocolate." It could be my monitor, but the coloring of my whip is a bit different than what is pictured above (or even on http://www.basswhips.com for that matter). I like the color of my whip a lot better than what I actually see on the site or above, as it looks more of a naturally-aged whip brown color.

No, he is not 6 months. I would guess about a month for him.

The weight of mine of mine was about the same, if not heavier than Indydawg's Stenhouse. Keep in mind these are 8 footers. Mine was lighter than Dakota Ellison's 10ft David Morgan whip.

As to the wait time at basswhips, it shouldn't be more than a month unless Tim's schedule is very busy. He has a day job so he doesn't make whips during the day.
