Two questions about bag modification

Post by Magno »

Okay, first of all, how hard is it honestly to redye a bag?
If I were to do so, would I need ot worry about water or anything like that? I'm very unfamiliar with dyeing and I'm unsure about how permanent it would be...

Secondly, what about stiffner? I like my bags to have some shape to them. Has anyone tried this before?

I'm not familiar with anyone ever redying their bags or using stiffiner. Usually, you can just bury it in the ground for a week to give it a distressed look. To give it the right shape, I'd say just fill it up with items that give it the shape you're looking for.

If you want to give it a good shape then soak it in water for a few minutes. The canvas will become still as the water swells the fibers. Hand form it to the shape you want and let it drip dry on a towel. I let mine dry in the sun on a towel. Most of the wrinkles will resolve or be lessened by doing this and it will tend to hold a better shape. I have done this with both of my MKVIIs and my MKVI with no ill effects whatsoever.

Also, just using it on a daily basis and filling it with the stuff that you like to pack around will eventually do the same thing.

Not sure about redying, or even the need to redye a bag, since these all came in various shades of green to khaki depending on the original maker. I think that most folks consider the screen accurate bags to be a pale green to a greenish-not-quite-khaki color, rather than the medium to dark green that seems to be more common.

If you want to redye a bag the best advice i can give you is try using a fabric dye such as Rit dye.. here's there website with a bunch of helpful information on how to dye and what color you want the bag to be...

I've used it before on other things and it has worked out great.
