Are you TOO screen accurate?

I admit it, there have been times when I've walked out of the house and felt too screen accurate for public appearances.
But then I ask why I bought these cloths in the first place if I'm not going to wear them.
So here's a little test for you on "How to know if you are too SA."
You change your clothes every day, but only a COW member could tell…and to them it’s obvious!
Deborah Nadoolman calls you to find out what Harrison Ford wore in Raiders.
When you watch an IJ movie you keep changing hats according to scenes.
John Williams follows you around for musical inspiration.
You don’t dress any different for a Halloween party and you finally feel comfortable.
Whenever you get your picture taken, George Lucas claims he owns the copyrights.
So, how SA are you?

Ya I am definitely too SA. However, IMO, what's the point of dressing up if you're not gonna go all the way?

I thought I was the only one who dressed like that...

I really don't like being TOO SA. I may like Indy's casual style, I like brown, kakhi, gray, bone white. BUT I don't dress like him in every way. That would be a sort of cosplaying. I'm following his style, not imitating him: it would be limitative.
I.E. : a black sweater it's not so bad while wearing a fedora with a black ribbon, and the MKVII really combines well with green colors and black as well.

I wear my jacket every day and my Aldens frequently, and I use sometimes (rarely) the hat or the bag, but all the other gear is for "costuming" or special occasions only. Going around in full Indy regalia it's a bit ridicolous IMO. I love Indiana Jones, but I have my own personality, I don't need to borrow it from a movie character.

well I don't think anybody here goes around carrying a whip or gun holsters
at least, I hope!

Well, it's a bit ridicolous even without whip and gun!!

Funny AND interesting. Sometimes I've found myself getting dressed in the morning and having to go back and change something because I looked too much like Indy.
I try not to wear khaki pants if I'm wearing the jacket and hat, but sometimes I do catch myself and have to change them to some dark jeans instead. I do wear my Aldens a lot though, and my Todd's shirt is my favorite shirt. I actually don't wear my hat SO much anymore, but when I do wear it, I have to plan my outfit carefully.

Same here on all accounts McFly, but now that I have my new AB I wear it a lot.

I have a coworker who calls me Indy when I wear only the jacket and regular khaki pants.
I tell him to keep pushing it, and one of these days I'm bringing in the whip!

Good points, amusingly made.
At my best I'm just 'Indyesque'
At my OTHER best I'm just ME (in Indy-ish gear)

First of all, I always wear the boots. I just do. Plain and simple. Secondly, if I'm wearing the hat and jacket, I try to avoid wearing any more brown earth tones (so it usually ends up being jeans and a green shirt).
I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've gone out in public in, more or less, full gear without intending to dress up as Indiana Jones;

I wear the Todds shirt, brown cargo pants, boots and my wested at least once a week and no one has ever even noticed. I've worn my hat too never got one comment either. I always wear the jacket so maybe people just think it's my ususal look.
Geek with a Whip?

Going too SA at work (where I am most of the time) would make me feel like I was trying to really
be someone else. I sit at a computer all day programming - I think a whip and a bag worn by a guy doing that would look just a tad creepy ...
Now for Halloween I do eventually want the full gear (do I have to get a gun though?).
Wearing hats, jackets, and belts is normal attire and that's what I'll stick with for now. I've worn a black fedora and black leather jacket in the winter for years and my co-workers expect it of me, and like the look. They may not even notice the new Indy stuff.
One thing that'll probably keep me from ever beng totally SA is that, due to skin sensitivity caused by a neuro condition that landed me in Mayo Clinic, my feet are so particular about shoes, I doubt I could stand wearing anything resembling Aldens.

There's no such thing as
too screen-accurate in this hobby.

the answer of course is hold more costume parties at your own place (guess what I'm doing for my birthday)

The only time I ever think I'm too SA is when I think about how much money I've spent on this outfit and how many "close enough" items I tossed out when I upgraded to SA. That's only compounded when I realize that nobody else I know will know how accurate it is.

My girlfriend always teases me about wearing military/safari style shirts. I never really thought of it as being Indy, because I wore them before I got into this hobby. When I got my NH, she had no idea it was an Indy shirt and told me "Now you have one in every color."

I have by and large avoided that temptation. apart from the fedora, the fedora has to be right... oh... and the jacket. come to think of it the bag looks wrong with the fedora and jacket. The whip is the wrong length but i can live with that... unless... I'll just LOOK on Ebay, no harm in looking is there?

When I started this hobby, it was to put together a close enough outfit as cheap as possible. And I did one for under $100. But then I'd find something that was a little closer and got that, and later something even a little closer... you know the rest. Now my cheap close enough is probably getting close to what it would have cost to buy the real deals to begin with. And my entire wardrobe is looking a bit monochromatic, if you know what I mean.

With the exception of the pants, boots, and whip I've tried to refrain from settling for close-enoughs exactly for that reason. In the foreseeable future, I don't plan on getting NH or Wested pants. The L.L. Beans that I dyed are just fine as far as I'm concerned (and machine washable!). The boots, I'll wear until they've got nothing left to give; than I'll get some of Todd's boots. I have no interest in getting a kangaroo whip because of all the care it requires; nylon is fine by me.
All in all, it's been a long time collecting all this gear. I probably started about two years ago, and I'll only just be completing my gear this month. The thing is, 10 out of my 13 Indygear pieces are 100% SA. If I'd settled for close enoughs during these past two years, I'd have a really hard time trying to justify getting a new hat to serve the same purpose as the $90 hat I just bought last month.

Let us put it in perspective oh brothers and sisters of the Indige'ahed Tribe. We have no righteous cause to complain.
Instead, spare a sympathetic thought for those other poor Ge'ahed Tribes, The Ba-tman, The Pyratzov-th'karibeán, and The Helboi, who worship false gods and dare not walk honourably abroad bearing the ceremonial robes of their beliefs.
Tis such a sad affliction.
Truly we are fortunate that our Idol has blessed us with raiments that are both beautious and practical.

Touchette enigmata.
Not to offend anyone, but I have often thought, "at least I'm not trying to dress like Star Wars characters."
My son recently bought a leather biker jacket like Mutt's. I thought we'd be a great match, but he put 2" spikes coming out the shoulders to make it like Ghost Rider.
I admit it looks great, but the high school won't let him wear it now.

Ahhhh, to wear all your gear in public. To me there's really no difference between dressing up in all your gear in public and dressing like a stormtrooper. A hat and a jacket is one thing, but whip and holster to the grocery store or to Best Buy? Really?
I love all things Indy, and have some great gear, which I proudly display at home, and will wear when there is need of a costume. If I see someone in public all decked out as Indy, I would never say anything to them to make fun of them out of respect for the hobby, but I can't help but feel a little embarassed for them.
Also, my wife would kill me if I ever went out in public dressed like that!
That said, I love the way it feels to put my gear on, and can totally understand why people do it, and I say if it makes them happy and they are comfortable doing it and aren't hurting anyone, go for it!

Going a wee bit off topic perhaps, bear with me, it feels the same as when I officiate at Pagan events. I have special ceremonial robes
http://www.freewebs.com/hersir-irminsul ... 223&prev=1
They do three things all at once.
[A] They tell the participants, 'I am like you and I take your beliefs seriously',
they add the theatrical effect required to help put participants in the correct mindset,
[C] most important for me, as an individual: as I don the robes I also take on a new personna, one of authority and ability to perform the tasks required.
The difference with Indy is I get all that just from a hat!

I guess I never really meant the whip and holster part of the outfit, just everything else all at once.

I just dig the IJ style/look. I'm not SA in any way, but if I dressed out and went into the local pub, not a soul in there would think or say anything other than 'Indiana Jones geek'. My jacket is a Wested Raiders from about ten years ago, totally non-distressed except for normal wear. My shirt is the right color and came from Wal Mart. The pants are the right color in cotton pleated khakis by Lee. The trouser belt is leather with the wrong buckle but looks 'right' with the other stuff. The chukkas are tan suede Skechers that have been 'mink-oiled' to be darker and smoother. The hat is a Miller, and totally wrong according to what is now known about taper, bashing, etc., but in silhouette it would look like the one in the COW logo at the top of the page. I don't even own a revolver, but if I totally dressed out I would wear a blued Hi-Power in a repro WWII russet tan holster and belt, or a Colt .45 in a surplus U.S. holster on the same leather belt. I have a shoulder bag that is surplus military from Switzerland (I think), and that's it - no whip. I forgot the gloves - I have several pair I could choose from that have been 'distressed' by years of hard use out in the yard. I might get a better hat now because after losing thirty pounds, my head size went down from a 7 1/4 to about a 7 1/8. I already have a sizing strip of felt behind the back one-third of the band, and I can probably make it work by putting one in the front, too. After all, the hat shouldn't blow off even in an open-cockpit airplane!
As we all know, IJ was seen in many different hats and jackets in the same movie throughout the series, so there is a lot of flexibility even for those who are SA. I guess I need to start wearing this stuff more when working outside to begin to get some 'didtressing' on all of it!
