CS AB Color

Watching CS on Blu-Ray, I've noticed that the fedora seems to be lighter in color than most ABs we have been seeing lately. The closest color I have seen is Oak's Raiders AB. Has Steve been using darker felt bodies or is this just a result of film lighting?

The lighter color you're seeing is Fullers Earth applied to the hat by Bernie, coupled with studio lighting. ;-)

I figured lighting had something to do with it. I didn't suspect Fullers afftecting the color though. Now that I think of it, the hat in the opening scene is the least distressed of the hats seen in the film and is the darkest in color. I guess there is some connection between Fullers and coloring.

no its not, there are also lighter colored felt hats in the movie, I've noticed it , too some in scenes that did not have dust to it, Whiskeyman used to own a AB from CS felt Batch and it was really light in color.

Bernie preferred a slightly lighter color, as it matched the old screen used hero hat he had in hand better. I had to develope a technique - based on the distressing technique I'm using if desired - to make the AB-Dlx. felt match that particular run from Steve. The felt Steve use varies a little bit from batch to batch (color wise). The good thing on the darker hats is that over time, they'll look exactly as what you see on screen

If you notice Marc with a really good sun tan, it's becuse of the industrial strength sunbed he bought to lighten the hats....

It crossed my mind back then to be honest, but I chose NOT to put the hats into a solarium while waiting outside myself. Instead - as written above - I modified the distressing technique, so the felt could be lightened up equally all over the hat.
I think Bernie had both a Raiders (later on) and a LC hat. I know that when he called me up first time, he had an LC hat at hand 'cause I asked him what liner it has. Bernie didn't really know what I meant so I continued with questions like, does it have a blue and golden logo or a pentagon shaped burgundy logo that sais Herbert Johnson? When he confirmed the pentagon shaped logo, I told him that it's a hat from LC and that it had a narrower brim on the sides then a Raiders Fedora, that it had probably tapered quite a bit over the years and how I thought that the bow looked as if it was done really quickly. I believe at that time he REALLY started taking me seriously

Thanks for chiming in Marc. I'm looking forward to my AB ageing and settling into the on screen color.
