(This thread is pointless without pics!!!) I know I know... soon enough folks..

Well i spent the better part of the day yesterday building a long needed wall rack for my whips.
Bascially what I did was get some 1/4" thick Poplar from the hardware store and I found some "tumbler pins" that were nice lathed/turned pegs about 4 inches long by 1/2" diameter.
I drilled 1/2" holes and put the pegs in, then painted the whole thing..
sounds pretty simple, but it was friustratingly complicated by the need to have the whips spaced a certain distance.
I have the whips coiled up and fastened with velcro straps they are then hung from a single peg and the handle is horizonal and proped on the peg to its left.... it seems to work very well and prevents any "sag" in the whip commonly seen from a single peg setup...

I'm looking forward to seeing your display. I was surprised how little attention my plaque made. I guess most people don't display them on the wall.

well my rack that I made does display them nicely but its more of a storage...
I have been carrying all of my whips around in bags since i got them and i feel that the boys need to breathe!
so its just storage until they are used....

well thats actually my scottish wall, with claymore etc... but that was actually the only blank space in my display room i have left... so only option

I like how it looks alot. Very nice display for them.

Wonderful display. It's not over the top and looks nice with the other stuff. Just for kicks and giggles, how about a shot of the entire wall so we can see what else you have there with the whips? I'm curious to see some of these swords etc.

Admitably, when looking at the wall by itself, the whips dont belong with scottish stuff...
However if you saw the rest of the room, youd understand what a mish-mash it is anyway...

Very cool collection. I've only got a few swords (carbon steel rapier + main gauche, a LOTR Gandalf sword I found for $40, and a pair of stainless steel katanas I got in high school), and a couple of Nepali daggers (one is touristy and the other is the real deal thatlooks like it was used often...).

Moving forward I'm only buying "real" weapons/replicas for the books I'm writing. It helps to write a scene when I can hold the weapon and feel the weight and balance.

Yes, the whip is part of this strategy. I have a character who is adopted by nomadic horsemen who use whips, as well as short bows, long swords, etc.

My wife is dying for me to replace my cheapy katanas. I guess I'll just hae to accomidate her.

well several reasons...
#1, My bloodline is somewhat Scottish... Mixed with a lil German...
#2 Highlander... that TV show got me really interested into scottish history which prompted me to....
#3 take a trip to scotland.... when i graduated highschool, i took a week long trip/tour to Scotland and i was HOOKED... also that kilt you see in the corner was purchased at a Kilt factory in the highlands as well as a few of those posters.... That framed certifricate in the corner, high up, is actual a DEAD to one square inch of LAND that i own in scotland!! thats RIGHT, im a LAND OWNER, so you have to refer to me as LAIRD!!!
I just love that country, the history... everything about it... Ill return there one day......

That swept-hilt hanging adjacent to the map is gorgeous. Looks like a rapier but the large shoulder on the blade is leading me to believe a different classification...

Colichemarde is the type of blade
a rapier typically has a diamond cross section or similar.
the colichemarde had as V cross section.
the idea was that it stiffened the blade..
Ive seen very few historical examples, as it was a pretty difficult blade type to make , id imagine.
this one is just a Stainless steel Marto Highlander commerative sword though.

Shagbd - do you have your family tartan in there? I recently bought a tie at the QM that had my family's tartan on it - it's one of my new favorites! My paternal grandmother was a Morrison, so I have a healthy dose of Scottish blood in me, too. Good stuff!

And also... you know... those whips are pretty shiny. Why don't you pick out some of your favorites and send 'em out to CA to be broken in? ;-)

not a single whip you see on my wall is being "stored"....... just waiting for the next day to get cracked!

You can if its a loose coil, one that doesn't force the whip to bend tightly,
I only say this because thats how i've stored all my whips for years when not in use.

Now that i've seen the cool whip rack, I have to admit, that would look really neat on the wall of my room .

Kooniu, your collection is awesome. What I like is that you have many whips from different traditions, old and new. I got interested in the green whip too... because I made one last weekend exactly with the same technique, although it is made with ixtle rope (a fiber from a plant similar from where tequila is extracted). Still, I'm having a bit of a hard time to get a good taper and a tight knotting! Perhaps I'll post a picture when I'm done with it.

Not to hijack this thread, but after the pic Kooniu I must know how it is made, and thank you for posting it.

A couple quick questions for you.

What is your grail tablet made of and how is it mounted? I've got one that I've wanted to hang for years, but have never figured out a good method.

Also, what can you tell me about your curio table? I'm looking to get one to display some of my stuff.

Grail Tablet: hollow resin that i bought on RPF.... there was a run a while back, VERY light weight.

"Curio" table: I made this one myself years ago when i started running out of wall space to hang swords. It now holds many of my Highlander replica swords which lay on a MacLeod Scottish tartan.

each board is drilled thru with a long woodscrew passing thru the board into the wall. Each board has about 3 screws in it.

yup!!!

So I went out and made one today! It's only to hold 3 whips, (2 of which aren't here yet.... lol) but I'm really happy with it. It's also not as subdued as yours, Shagbd - I painted an Indy logo on it and the quote:
"Indy! Your whip!" -Shortround
So it's a lot more childish looking I think than it was even supposed to look. Oh well!

Here's a few pics! Thanks for posting yours, and helping me get this project off the ground!







The toughest part was painting on the Indy logo. I cut out a logo and made a stencil, then painted it on orange. Then I took black paint and did the outlines and shadows, and then lastly I took the orange again and did touchups. It took a long time doing that, but I'm glad with how it came out! I think it'll look even better when the other 2 whips arrive! I wanted to stain the wood (the same kind you used) but the smallest can I could find was $12. I ended up just painting it brown and sealing it with polyurethane. What do you think?

Ok, ok. So, getting back to the thread... you guys have done a great job making all your racks. My 14 year old 10' Strain whip usually sits in the floor all night, and when I wake up I let it have a nap in my bed, until I get home back from work and give it a few cracks.

Perhaps I should consider making one for my own whip collection. No fancy kangaroo whips, except for the Strain (and that will change shortly!!! ), but many of them are traditional Mexican whips made out of rope, or souvenir leather whips. They're just sitting inside plastic bags.

Shagbd, I know you have old school Indy whips made by Strain and Del Carpio... but whose the third one from?

Shane, your Stenhouse looks even darker than my Strain. How old is it? Or was it just made with a dark hide? Darn... cracker knots! Don't you hate them?

Thanks! Glad you think so! That whip is a STenhouse, but I have a Bernardo and a Jacka on the way. The Bernardo should be here in the next week or so, and the Jacka is "2-3 months." I don't know though if I'll have room for the Jacka, after seeing how huge yours is on that rack. And my pegs are even a little closer together than yours!

I think when Marhala said your "3rd" whip, he meant the one on your bottom row, 3rd from the right. Maybe? What are those 4 whips below the Jacka?

It's actually almost 5 years old, but it's made of whiskey colored hide, so it's always been pretty dark. Here she is just before Paul shipped it to me:

And I don't mind cracker knots so much - what I really hate is fall knots! Although I haven't gotten one in a long time, I remember they're a HUGE pain in the butt.

Exactly. Those are the ones I meant. The picture where you have two racks, one below the other. Towards the right, the last three are old style Indy whips. Am I correct?

And Shane, if Paul would be making whips right now, I'd love to have one of his. I just love the way it flows in your videos.

Fall knots? It seems you either get cracker, or fall knots. I especially hate the cracker knots which form near the fluff! As a matter of fact, I think I started getting fall knots after watching the picture in Morgan's Whips and Whipmaking 2nd Ed.!!! LOL

um ok... yeh the bottom rack are all Indy whips..... none of them are "old"... all bought in the last few months...

from left to right:
9 Ft Strain KOTCS
6 ft Wickline Indy
9 ft Del Carpio Raiders
8 ft Morgan made in 1995 (this is the only "old" one)

the jacka is actually starting to break in pretty nicely and is no longer hanging over the whips below it.
the transition is still very stiff tho.
