My sister from Arkansas brought my mother down from northern Louisiana (to Houston) so she could celebrate her 85th birthday with us. My brother from Austin also came over. During her visit I was showing them my whip collection and took my brother and sister out to teach them a simple cattleman crack. My mother was watching and asked if she could try. I thought - why not - I had a hat and goggles for her to wear. She had been listening to my instructions to the others and - well look for yourself. This is the first time she had ever held a bull whip much less tried to crack it.

By the way - that is my 8' Nolan whip she is cracking.

YEAH!! She's a natural!! And it doesn't look like she's muscling it, either! She's a perfect example that finesse is the best way to go. :) :)

That was awesome!!

Thanks for the comments. Yea - she was real proud of the fact that she got good cracks out of the whip when my brother and sister just couldn't seem to get the timing right. She loved it. And you can see she isn't putting any muscle into it because let's face it there isn't much muscle left to put into it - it was all timing. In a way I wasn't surprised because she was raised in a large family with mostly brothers so she had to be pretty athletic when she was younger just to keep up (or defend herself  ). And when I was growing up she was the one that played catch with me when I was a pitcher in little league and she definitely had a good throwing arm.

Paul,

That was AWESOME! Thanks for posting that video. I am so honored that she is using one of my whips. Also, this really proves that good form is more important than force.

If she wants to get into whipcracking, I'll gladly give her a generous senior citizen's discount, :whip: :)

Regards,

Paul Nolan

Be careful Paul - she might just take you up on that discount. She's always been a little on the adventurous / feisty side. You are right about the form over strength issue. Even though she doesn't need a walker or wheelchair she barely gets around much any more so strength doesn't even enter into the picture. We constantly have to get onto her about trying to do too much. One time she was actually moving her treadmill from one room to another when she fell and split her lip. Fortunately she didn't do any more damage to herself. She was definitely thrilled that she could crack the whip when my brother and sister couldn't. I have a Strain and a DelCarpio but they are both 10' and still stiff from being new. I got yours from another member here and it is nice and loose. Glad you enjoyed the video.

This is also good news for Ford as he can now relate to someone his own age who is a fan.
