Simple, Burning Brim Question
how do i get the brim to do this? i know about the turn, but im talking about that very sharp dip thats on the left side of the picture. ive turned my brim quite a bit and have never been able to achieve it. any suggestions?
oh and on a side note relating to the topic name: does anybody have any pictures of a burnt fedora? i wanna see just how effective this burning technique ive read about is.

yeah i meant turned, ive always been curious to see the burnt hat though too so i figured why not be punny about it.binkmeisterRick wrote:First of all, do you mean "turned hat" instead of "burned hat?" There's a HUGE difference between the two! If the hat needs to be tight on your head in order to achieve this kind of result with the turn. That, and the shape of your head against the hat will also affect how the brim warps.

put your hat on straight. bash in a standard snap brim. turn it. the right side should automatically give this effect due to the change in ovalarity (is that a word?) in the crown.
if you want to get a bang on SOC look however, you won't achieve that with a new hat where the brim break is a crisp 90 degrees. the bring break needs to droop as if its trying to resort back to its original hat body shape (conular).
also alot of the rear brim is showing through in the back. this is also due to the drooping of the brim break in the back and the loss of most of its flanged curve.
i'm thinking of doing an SOC hat.....one of these days......but the thing is, if you start with an idol grab bash, eventually if you kick the crud out of it enough.......you'll get an SOC bash. then you go, "oh my god, what have i done to my beautiful fedora?".......try to fix it, then you get your WOS bash

spray distilled water on the crown and pop out the creases as best you can.....maybe stuff with newspaper to keep them out. try to return it to its open crowned state (i'm assuming that it was bashed without the turn).
when it dries.....rebash off center. put it on your head open crown, and then turn it to warp the brim, then bash the crown. be sure that the crown is completely dry or it will want to resort back to its old creases. depending on the hat you have and how resilient the felt is......will determine how well you can pull it off. akubras are good....believe it or not, hj felt is not bad for this as well.

Turn or no turn, all the hats I've ever had have developed this dip from contact with my wrist/forearm as I put the hat on. Now, that may mean that I just handle my hats incorrectly, but I have a left-handed neighbour whose hats have the same "dip" on the left side of the brim - presumably caused in the same way.

I have gotten this effect from a "turn", and from pulling the front of the brim down by using my right hand. I instinctivly pull down over my right eye. I think you see Harrison do that a few times during Raiders too.
My lid isn't nearly as tight as his in that shot. It also hasn't been abused as much. I think without forcing it, the felt will relax with enough use.

In the 1981 VHS release "Great Movie Stunts & The Making Of Raiders of the Lost Ark" (buy it now!, you won't regret it) http://www.amazon.com/Great-Movie-Stunt ... 630021818X While filming the Raven Bar, Ford grabs the front of the brim at the dip, with two fingers of his left hand, then folds the side of the brim up with his right. ! He slightly creases the brim to Make this feature more prominent. I do it every 4th ot 5th time I wear my hat.
