Wested Sizing Question

Post by jnicktem »

I have been thinking of sending my Wested back (initially because it isn't what I ordered... I was supposed to get a washed lamb) and I was thinking I might be able to go down a size. The jacket is a 44L, with sleeves measuring 26.75" (that's why they look long, I am already planning on getting those shorter).

By looking at these pictures, please tell me your opinions. Could I go down to a 42L?

I am not sure exactly... however a 44 jacket always has fit me well. A lot of times I can wear a 42, but some jackets in a 42 are too tight on me.

Oh, and when you say long, do you mean the length of the jacket? Personally, I like the length (I am not a SA nut). I know the sleeves are too long, though.

I will be getting some length taken off of the sleeves. That must be done.

It's kind of hard to judge the length with the pics on that angle.
Does your camera have a timer? I just set mine on something about waist high, set the timer and stand back.
Anyway, going to a 42 might be a good idea. It's not a huge jump down in size, but might make it feel a tad more fitted.
Pretty solid jacket though, I like it.

Any specific angles you would like? It is difficult for me to judge since I am no expert when it comes to these things...

My camera does have a timer, however it is too dark in the house to get a good picture. I will take some in the morning.

Okay, so this is what I am thinking...

1) Go down a size to a 42L.
2) The shoulder size would have to stay the same since that fits well.
3) The sleeves need to be shortened, maybe by .75"
4) I would like to keep the length, it may not be SA, but I like it longer.
5) Change leather to a Washed Goat.

How's that sound?

I think you need a 42R, but if you prefer long jackets go with the 42L. JMO.

it looks a tad too big for you I think you need a size smaller. Maybe even though it says 44L maybe the jacket is mismarked. Good luck

Well I got an e-mail from Gemma saying that if I return the jacket they can remake it for me in another leather, which for me would have to be the washed goat. I just have two problems,

1) How do I send it back? Any ideas who would be the best carrier for me to use (nothing too expensive, I hope)?
2) I was hoping to have a jacket for Halloween, which is why I rushed to order the jacket when I did, but now it is getting too close to Halloween for waiting for a new jacket to have. And to be Indy on Halloween, I need the jacket (it's a bit cold here in late October (we've been known to get snow...).

Can you reuse the bag it came in? Weight it and see how much ups.com or usps.com show. You would need to get insurance of course, which USPS would have to be Priority International (also due to the weight; 1st class International is only for packages 4 lbs. or less and you can't get insurance with 1st class). For a 4 lb. package to UK for USPS, you're looking at $34 plus insurance for $300 which is $5.25, so almost $40 total.

It does look a bit big. But not crazily so. You look quite young, I dare say you'll probably grow to fill it out in the next few years! (Not meant to be condescending in any way!). There are some scenes in Raiders where the jacket looks loose on him (Amman's house for example and the opening temple scene).

But if you are not happy with the fit send it back unworn, it would not be fair to wear it for Halloween and send it back.

Small packet airmail, wrapped in 2 layers of proper shipping sacks including the original Wested bag, nothing else. Don't use a box. That should be cheapest. Insure it if you feel you need to, and remember to mark the packet clearly as a return as stated on the Wested site.

Unfortunately, a custom will probably be too late for Halloween.

I am only 20, and I am done growing, so there is no way I am going to fill out this jacket. I have only worn it taking these pictures trying to decide what to do with it...

I will probably send it back ASAP, once Gemma or Peter gets back to me and we get everything figured out. It just bites that I will most likely won't have a jacket for Halloween, which means I will have to think of something else... :-k

Oh, I am done, there's no question about it. I even had scans that showed I am done growing. If anything, I am getting smaller, since this past summer I have lost around 40 pounds.

Just a couple questions from me....

How does it feel? Do you plan on wearing it cold weather, as what you have is perfect to layer a heavy sweater.

Considering you haven't even worn the jacket in, you're not accounting how much you're going to lose in length with ride up from the leather at the elbows, small of the back, and shoulder area after a period of time in regular wear.

If you go down a size, it will look great, but after a while, I have a feeling you're going to cry the blues after the leather is finished 'moving' where it's going to move after being worn for a while.

Just some things to mull over as you make your decision.

Regards! Michaelson

If you go down a size the shoulder seams will NOT be the same. They
will be slightly shorter due to the fact that a size 42 jacket is physically
smaller all around than a size 44.

It won't be that much shorter, maybe a quarter inch or so, but it will be
shorter.

But, the shoulder seams on the size 44 you have now are hanging too
far off your actual shoulders as it is. It's giving the jacket a baggy look on you.

A size 42 will probably fit you better.

Also, get yourself measured accurately! You stated that you don't know
what measurement your chest actually is, but a size 42 fits you, or a size
44 fits you.

This is why you are having problems getting a jacket that fits properly.
You need to know what your actual body measurements are in order to
get a proper fitting jacket. Its when you guess at what size you are, like
you are doing now, that will continue to cause you problems with the fit
of the jacket.

Get the correct measurements for your chest, your sleeve length, your shoulder
to shoulder measurement, your back length, your waist, your height, and your weight.

Once you have these actual body measurements, take a jacket that you
already own, and that fits you the way you like it to fit, zip it up, and lay it
flat on your bed with the chest facing up. You are going to take some
measurements from that so you can compare them to what Wested offers
in their jackets, so you can see which jacket size will fit you the best.

Measure it across the chest, from one armpit seam to the other. Write this number down.

Measure the sleeve length from the shoulder seam, down the OUTSIDE
edge of the sleeve, all the way down to the end of the cuff. Write this number
down.

Now, turn the jacket over, and make sure its laying flat.

Measure it across the back from one shoulder seam to the other from
the point where the shoulder seams meet the top of the sleeves. Write
this number down.

And finally, measure it from the base of the collar, which is the seam where the
collar meets the back panel, down the middle of the back panel, all the way
to the bottom hem. Write this number down.

Now, with your actual body measurements, and your measurements from
the jacket you already own, and like how it fits you, you can compare these
to Wested's website, and see which jacket is the right size for you.

Remember that you can have Wested adjust the sleeve length to fit YOU.
You can have Wested adjust the back length an inch or two longer to fit YOU. You can even
order a jacket that is sized inbetween a size 42 and 44 if that is what will fit YOU better.

Whatever you do, you NEED to get yourself all the correct and proper measurements
of your body BEFORE you place another order, or you will end up getting
another jacket that does not fit you.

I already have an actual winter coat, so I probably will only wear the Indy jacket in the Spring, Fall, and cool summer nights. Overall, I just feel that this jacket is just way too big on me, even if the leather "moves." It's not so horribly big that I can't even wear it (which is why I posted this question... since I am just not totally sure).

I have already made better measurements, and know what to go for in the event of me sending this jacket back (which looks like I will do).

Thanks JC1972!

I also want everyone to bear in mind that the actual reason for me wanting to send the jacket back in the first place is because it is the wrong leather to which I ordered. If it was the right leather, I would just keep it because to me, it fits, even if it is a little big. If it was too small that would be different. However, since it is the wrong leather, I was thinking of sending it back. And if I send it back, I might as well exchange it for one that fits better.

May be this is not the leather you ordered, so it's "wrong", but remember that lambskin is a beautiful, soft leather, probably the best of all. I don't think goat is better. JMO.

I appreciate the opinions! However, I just have heard so many good things about the washed goat, that if I am ever to get an Indy jacket, I would like it in that leather.

Haha, I have thought about that. But I just don't have the money. Just about everything I have is going towards school (which is no cheap expense...) so I REALLY need to be careful about my spending right now. Basically, once this jacket thing gets settled, I can't buy anything for quite some time (this includes food! lol!).

Well, I just sent the jacket back today (a half an hour ago) and hopefully it gets there in one piece (shipping things has always scared me a bit, no matter how tough it is or how much insurance is on it). I included a letter explaining what happened and what I would like done for a new jacket. That was done as per Gemma's instructions.

I feel overly confident that the new jacket will fit me MUCH better! I put the jacket on before I sent it and I knew that I really did need to go down a size. For the sleeves I took off a good inch, which needed to be done.

Also, the leather I asked for is a Washed Goat, which I have heard sooo many good things about I can't wait for it to come!

you might even consider a 42 Reg.? The shoulder seams are way past your shoulders in my opinion. The Raiders typically fits maybe two inches comfortably just below belt level.

42 Regs never fit me. Every time I go jacket shopping I always try on several sizes to get the right fit, and 42R never seems to fit. 42L's sometimes do, and 44R's always fit me, but sometimes are shorter than what I would like. 44L's always fit, but are sometimes too big (like the jacket... although I added a little to the measurements).

Just curious... I'm also looking at the Wested and usually wear a 42L. Would you mind telling your weight and height? I'm 6'3", 185 lbs. and have been wondering about the fit of a 42L or 44L (capacity to layer a sweater). I doubt that the "large" would have long enough sleeves.

I am 6'1" and roughly 160 lbs and I can wear a standard cut LC with a sweater underneath with ease. I think it all depends on what style of jacket you want though. I would have to say that you should not order an 80's cut if you want to wear a sweater, and although it is shorter than a Raiders jacket, an LC jacket has a more favourable cut at the sleeves for layering IMO.

Gregory; don't be fooled into buying something that will be too tight to be practical. If a good deal of your 185lbs is up top in the shoulders and chest, rather than in your stomach :) , a 42 may be far too small. Measure your chest. I'm 155 and wear a 42 with a bit of room to be comfortable, and have a slim waist and decent chest.
