The title says it all, what are your thoughts on Gussets? Do you recommend them? Do you not like them?

I see these same questions come and go over and over again.
I think the best thing to do is use the search function abit..maby flipp over a page and maby you'll find the answer.
and I dont mean it in a harsh way.
I just see the same questions over and over again...

I did use the search function but I couldn't find a topic asking what peoples thoughts on gussets was? Now, I didn't go and open every single thread (8 pages worth) however, I am not asking a specific question about gussets, therefore there is no answer. I just want to know what peoples' thoughts were.

Gussets or no gussests, both are SA for Raiders.
Personally I prefer to have them. I've owned jackets without gussests and find them a little restrictive.

Gussets. No one likes ripping out their armpits. Well, I'm exaggerating a bit, as usual.

Here's a quote from the Agent5 specs. Hope it helps:
17. Underarm Gussets - Some of the original Raiders jackets had underarm gussets and some didn't. I assume some of this was determined by whatever scene was being filmed and what they needed the jacket to be able to do for any particular scene, such as stunts. I can only find evidence of a 1-piece gusset being used as can be seen in the film, but some have requested a 2-piece gusset which Wested will accomodate. However, if it's film accuracy you're interested in then a small, 1-piece gusset or no gusset will do.

I have five Wested jackets...two with gussets and the rest without. I prefer the gussited two! Just my humble opinion! W>

I have two Westeds...one is a Special offer "Screen Accurate" Raiders and the other is my Goatskin "Street Wearable" Raiders.
My screen accurate is getting plenty of wear right now as we have cooler, autumn weather but I will switch to my Goatskin as it gets colder and I can wear more layers under it.
My Goatskin does have gussets and I would say that if you plan on heavily using your jacket in different weather and environments, gussets are definite good idea.

If I could go back ten years and change the order for my Wested Raiders, the first thing would be to click on the gussets. The second thing would be the cotton liner.
Hmmm. Maybe it's time to start thinking about a new jacket!

In a real world application, if you do a lot of driving, having gussets on your jacket definitely keeps the shoulders from rising when you are holding your arms out, hands on the steering wheel.
I like gussets for that reason.

Thanks jnicktem, I was wondering this myself!

I say go with the gussets. They make the jacket more comfortable, especially when reaching, raising your arms, etc. I don't think they detract at all.

The only reason why I asked is because to me, the gussets don't make the jacket look "right." Please don't ask me what is "right" because I can't decribe it... I just hope you can comprehend what I meant...
I just don't like the look of them. Sure, this is my first jacket and everything about it is still new to me and they might grow on me, but I just don't know.
I must say, I do think they make the jacket feel more comfortable, so I understand why they are there.

For instance, take a look at this picture:

I'm trying hard to see the gussets in that picture, but as they are in your armpit I can't. the only thing I see is some flaring-out of the pleats. You might want to loosen those side-straps a little.

Can someone please post the star pic where the gussets are visible?
I seem to have the edited version where they can't be seen.

I'm afraid I got rid of both the pic of the gussets and the jacket itself... I kind of forgot about this thread.

Actually, my experience is that not all gussetts are created equal. For example, the gussets on my Expo are so smal that they barely function. The Wested one piece gusset was, I am afraid, not much better. The best gussets on any leather jacket I have ever worn were on the Navy G-1.
