I noticed there's a Wested group on Facebook. I was only the second person to join, so it's not super popular or anything. Do any of you want to join?

Thanks for posting that, I'm now member number four, by the way I recently ordered a custom Wested novapelle jacket. They e-mailed me on the 15th of Sept. stating that it was slated to begin production. I got another e-mail that said it would be completed today, the 26th, and hopefully be in my hands early next week. Wow, a production turn-around time of two weeks! I only inquired as to whether I had any chance to receive it by Halloween and it looks like they really delivered. Pictures will be forthcoming when it arrives in the mail.

Maybe when you've been in the hobby for more than 8 days, you might think differently? Who knows.

This group is a good place to upload pictures of our jackets.

I'll probably join the group soon.
bigrex, you got an e-mail saying your jacket was finished? Today?
The reason why I ask is because my jacket was put into production more than 2 weeks ago, and I still haven't heard anything back from my e-mails asking the current situation. Not that I am impatient or anything, I just would like to know.
Also, in the past couple of days I have sent several e-mails to both Gemma and Wested about my jacket and other orders I have made and haven't received a response yet, which isn't typical in my experiences with them. Usually I hear back the next morning at the latest.
Is anyone else having trouble recently getting a reply from Gemma? Maybe something is wrong with their e-mail account...?

I guess maybe you are confusing time in a hobby with time registered on this board.

jnicktem,
This is my only experience with Wested as of yet. I did have a time getting my payment to them though, for some reason my visa debit card account just would not work, I tried to send payment and fill out the form for them several times and probably lost a couple weeks there, I did finally make payment and received the confirmation of production e-mail on the 15th.
I shot them a brief e-mail on the 23rd just to ask what my odds were of receiving anything by Halloween. I figured it was maybe 50-50 judging by my research of past COW posts and the expected turn-around time.
My brief e-mails have been responded to very promptly, the following day in fact each morning, not that I have sent very many e-mails, only one to ask about the turn-around time frame (sent twice, back-to-back since I made a typo on the first one) and a follow-up reply thanking them for their response and the fact that they stated they would be sure to have it to me by October 31st. She then replied back to that e-mail and said it would be done today, and a thanked them again and said I would post my remarks of satisfaction on COW.

Thanks bigrex. Now that the weekend is here, I probably won't hear anything back until Monday or Tuesday. I always got quick replies, but the last ones I sent within the last few days just didn't get anything back. I'm sure there is a good reason for it and I don't want to push it, I just wanted to know if anyone else had problems recently. But if you got an e-mail today...?
Oh well, maybe I'll just call Monday morning?

I received the e-mail from Gemma Wednesday stating it would be completed by day's end today (Friday).

Hmm, maybe you didn't say you were a COW member enough times,
hopefully you won't have a problem getting in touch with them on Monday. I imagine it may have gotten buried somehow.

Getting back to Facebook groups, I just created a group for members of Club Obi-Wan.

If this violates some rule, let me know and I will delete it.

Well, there's no way of proving it either way. What is factual, however, is that you're new in this community and I found your comment basically meaningless. Why bother even making it?

What are the advantages of a Club Obi-Wan Facebook page? Is it a stepping stone for people to find Club Obi-Wan who might not otherwise?

The advantage of a Club Obi-Wan Facebook page is to give members a chance to get to know each other better. While on this site, we are pretty focused on Indy Gear. Facebook is more of a personal connection.

I can say same about your comment to me and add that your comment could be perceived as slightly arrogant to a 'new member'.
Why did you make it?
I posted mine because a discussion Group of two (at the time of my posting) on Facebook when we have this Forum was not very interesting to me.
Will that suffice?

If you believe that COW is some sort of holy ground and the only place on the Internet where gear can be discussed, such a comment might hold some water. However, as it's not for most of us, I think the opportunity for COW members to relate to each other through a social networking service such as Facebook, which bring a whole stack of tools to the table that a forum community never will, is actually quite an interesting thing. If you don't like it, fine, but tossing out a, "doesn't sound too interesting" is just meaningless. What have you actually added to the discussion, apart from a very narrow view of where gear and gearheads should meet, that is?

It's not arrogant. It's factual. You are new in this house; you are new to this family. Making negative comments when the rest of us - who are incidentally joining the group and talking on Facebook - wouldn't know you from a bar of soap is just weird. Remember, you can only make a first impression once.

Personally, I don't think so. With a Facebook page, we can add people as friends, and get to know more about other people with a similiar interest.

My comment which you quote in your remark above is not even related to my post you quoted. They are not related.
You've made incorrect assumptions in a snide remark. What has that helped?

Incorrect. You asked, "What are the advantages of a Club Obi-Wan Facebook page?"
I answered this, referencing social networking tools that forum communities don't have.
You're clearly spoiling for some sort of fight, so I'm not inclined to talk to you beyond this post. Bye now.

I know I said I wouldn't do this, but I just have to comment...
It's amusing that I said, "I think the opportunity for COW members to relate to each other through a social networking service such as Facebook, which bring a whole stack of tools to the table that a forum community never will, is actually quite an interesting thing..." and RC Signals wanted to call me out for not answering his question.
Then jnicktem comments, "With a Facebook page, we can add people as friends, and get to know more about other people with a similiar interest..." which is basically a much more simplified version of what I said, and RCSignals is all, "Thank you..." about it.
They are the same thing, RCSignals. Social networking
IS about getting to know people with similar interests...
My advice? If you want to pick fights with people, at least have some consistency.

Keep it between the ditches, fellows, or this one is getting shut down.
As to this 'facebook' thing, I haven't had any reason to participate in anything like this for the entire time I've been involved on these boards, finding the open site, email, phone calls and PM's more than sufficient to make and keep friends in the hobby, and have done so for literally decades now.
I'm not sure why another 'layer' is needed, as it's just one more site to keep up with. Quite frankly, my plate is more than full with what is currently going on without adding to it.
What I DO find disturbing is that we use this site as an open forum to the entire community and world to share our information. This new entity would encapsulate that information among a few, with the priviso that it could only be seen if you JOINED that new entity. What's the point? You're just creating another site to discuss the exact same things, but with no framework. We share our gear informaation openly with everyone rather than behind closed doors.
If that's your thing, go for it.
I'll pass.
With that said, please keep this civil, or it's gone.
Regards! Michaelson

One thing I will say is the facebook group is an open group on facebook, meaning all of it's information is completely visible (to those using facebook). There is a way to make a closed group on facebook. Facebook does currently have about 130 million users across the globe and has surpassed Myspace. Here are a couple links, the first one talks about Facebook being at the 115 million mark and the second mentions they add 250,000 people a day, so if you do the math from the June article, that would put them at around 130 million. Many businesses, political candidates, entrepreneurs, etc. are making their own groups, profiles, and ads on facebook in order to take advantage of the large audience.
citRon,
Facebook basically is a MySpace for a somewhat older crowd. Older folks will use it to keep up on the lives of their children and grandchildren, while younger folks will use it as a social tool to get updated on their friends activities as well as update others around them. Overall, there are probably more teenagers using MySpace, while Facebook has tended to pull from a larger set of demographics. On the same topic, LinkedIn is a somewhat similar tool used by business professionals for networking & resumé purposes.

Me too! I miss my Coleco Vision game system.
As for the Facebook page, it could simply be a way for those who have a Facebook account to network without discussing gear...a phone book of sorts. That's the way I take it, anyway.
If someone created a COW MySpace group, I'd probably join just so I could add some friends and see their personal interests away from Indy. Who knows what other hobbies or interests we share.

Myspace got it's start when I was in High School, so everyone I knew had one. I was never really into it, but it was nice to connect with my friends online after school or during the summer. When I was a Senior in HS, Facebook came into play and everyone I knew got one of those. Facebook was considered a better Myspace (since a bunch of kids were taking it over!) with better privacy settings and applications. After everyone made the switch to Facebook, we kind of stopped using Myspace.
What I like about Facebook is I am able to keep up-to-date with all of my old High School friends, and now, some of my college friends. I get to see pictures of what they are up to, take a look at what their favorite books/movies/etc... are, and possibly find a way to meet up.

As I understand, MySpace was originally meant for musicians and budding musicians but was quickly ued by non-musicians as a Social network.
Facebook was designed as a Social network from the start.
There is nothing wrong with Facebook as such, but I agree with the perspective of Michaelson on the subject at hand.

This is exactly what it is meant to be. If you don't like it, don't join. Facebook is not for everyone, and even those with a Facebook might not want to join. Again, it is not for everyone, but those who do want to join are free to.
