Collar Stands
So I have a buddy that is not an Indygear guy at all. But he is a pretty avid Indiana Jones fan. He watches the movies constantly (at least Raiders & LC). He watches those movies more than I do. We started talking about Indiana Jones flubs (like the guy in blue jeans in the background when Indy is mourning Marion) & the behind the scenes movie-making details. Upon further investigation I find out that he had never even watched the dvd of the extras. I was floored especially considering that the dvd of the extras was the first thing that I went for when the box originally came out. I didn’t get around to the actual movies for some time (they did a great job on them, obviously). Anyway, a few days later he tells me that he started watching the making of Indiana Jones and he was glued to the screen. In fact, he got ¾’s of the way through and then started over again.
I got to thinking, I haven’t seen that bonus dvd for a while. It would be fun. Last night I had a chance to watch it. I get to the “stunt” featurette and I see Terry Leonard about to climb into a truck. I think it’s his first appearance in the documentary, if I remember correctly. The first thing that I notice is that his collar stand looks like the one on a G&B Expedition. I must have that on the brain after the last few days. It’s really an intricate piece of work. In fact, Dave Marshall from G&B told me that the collar stand on the Expedition is one of the reasons that they don’t regularly offer it in cowhide. Cowhide is too thick for the intricate sewing needed to produce the thing. I start to think that I don’t remember a collar stand stitched on the top & bottom on a Raiders jacket besides the G&B. Wings is obviously not a Raiders jacket so it doesn’t count. I don’t really have access to a Wested Raiders these days & I couldn’t remember the details of its collar stand. The one below doesn’t have the line of stitching on the bottom of the inside of the stand.

Now, the only other Raiders jackets (that I know of) are by Magnoli & Todd. I know that both of those guys used the Expedition to help in their jacket’s designs. I know that Todd even got some help from _ on his jacket. I’ve never examined either. What are their collar stands like? I’m curious.
Also, I don’t even know if the Raiders hero jacket had its collar stand stitched like that or not. Does anybody know? I don’t really care either way as far as “accuracy” goes with regards to all the current jacket makers. I’m just interested in the detailing. I guess I’m still part “freak”.
PS- If nobody posts a screen cap of the Terry Leonard shot that I'm referring to by tomorrow, I will. I just don't have the dvd with me today.
PPS- Another thought was that maybe this shot of Leonard was the Wilson "truck dragging" jacket, but the jacket in question doesn't look as beat up and looks like a "Leather Concessionaires" jacket. Regardless, the jacket that Leonard was in possession of (that Paterson examined) had a collar stand sewn & constructed with the top & bottom line of stitching.

The CS is a different collar stand all together. It's not part of the detail of it I don't think.Kt Templar wrote:I've got Wested Raiders Horse and Lamb, both with the top and bottom rows of stitches.
The CS I have doesn't but that may be a difference in the way the lining is attached.
It might also depend on the machinist.

I have two Raiders jackets; Wested and Magnoli. Both have the G&B style collar stand stitching, and both are lambskin.
I also have a heavy cowhide almost-Indy jacket by Magnoli with the same collar stand stitching.
My US Wings is the only one with no visible lower edge stitches.
As an interesting side note; the only jackets I have ever owned that even had a collar stand at all were Indy jackets (or inspired by, in the case of the Magnoli cowhide). I guess I should ask; was a collar stand featured on any of the jackets that inspired the Raiders jackets?

The early version of the Airforce A-2. A couple of years before Raiders, Leather Concessionaires made an A-2 for Ford to use for Hanover Street. I don't know if that A-2 had one or not. I just wondered where the collar stand came from with regards to the Indy jacket, especially when it makes construction of the jacket harder. That's why the Airforce did away with it with regards to later A-2's. It would have been nice to ask Paterson if he knew any details specifically about the collar stand and the Raiders jacket, but he's obviously gone.Chewbacca Jones wrote:I have two Raiders jackets; Wested and Magnoli. If you want to see one, go to Planet Hollywood at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and look at the jacket on display.....marked as being worn by Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It still has the MBA property tag too!Rundquist wrote:The early version of the Airforce A-2. A couple of years before Raiders, Leather Concessionaires made an A-2 for Ford to use for Hanover Street.

If most of the original Raiders jackets were destroyed, I wonder which jacket was originally (although briefly) on display, before it was switched out. My guess would be one from TOD.Michaelson wrote:If you want to see one, go to Planet Hollywood at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and look at the jacket on display.....marked as being worn by Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark. And that is exactly why we're all maniacs. It's just a jacket... we notice the smallest details here at COW, to the point of lunacy - the rest of the world would think an A2 is an Indy. And why not? Detail can be overrated.Michaelson wrote:I don't know, but if you ask Lee Keppler who also pointed out the incorrect jacket at another PH many years ago, they told him 'Who cares? No one will know the difference!', so I bet it's probably the original display.
