OK, so there is this video regarding the care and feeding of your Akubra:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8ZWy3HfT7w
and at roughly 1:45 the fellow says that shrinkage of a sweatband on a hat that's a perfect fit can be prevented by the:
"simple application of a
HIDEFUDD to the untanned side of the leather sweatband."
Of course he doesn't say "HIDEFUDD," "HIDEFORD" or any of the other words I have tried to figure out. Or at least I don't think so.
So tell me, hat gurus, what is this mystery substance? And what say you of this chap's advice?

Hide food. That's a term used for leather dressing.

Many folks use (dare I say it
) a light coating of Pecards on the back of their sweats turned wrong side out, then allow to totally soak in before turning back in right. It helps keep the sweats from drying out and cracking.

It’s just my opinion, but in your sweatband is not a good place to hide food, especially when your in bear country.

Of course, if you're in Yogi Bear country he might be more interested in trading his porkpie for your fedora.

that tub would allow you to coat a cow after the rain, before he's turned into a jacket!

It is my firm belief that Michaelson is in fact some alien librarian sent to earth by beings from another dimension. Either that or he has a huge brain like those guys in that Star Trek episode!!
...for the record, those were in fact supposed to be some type of compliment

I never thought I'd ever find use of this old spoof again.
