How do I get rid of the bat wing look for a SA look collar?

Post by Doeindy »

Hi all,

I have doe some research and found MK's Collar Fix in the Archives, but unfortunatley there are no images on that post anymore. I have asked our kind Moderators to place the images back, but I checked yesterday after two months of asking and there are still no images.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the bat wing jacket collar look?

I know there is a simple way to do it, but I just do not know what it is.

Many thanks to anyone who points me in the right direction; I know some of you guys know how to do this, as I have seen images of your jackets.

Here is an image of my much loved Raiders Goat Wested . The picture was taken the first day I purchased it.

All the best to you all,

Paul.

The only method that's worked for me is to get it wet and let it settle down.

Yeah you know I am still buzzy with happiness; I still can not beleive I finally got one; I am so blessed and I do not take that for granted for one minute.

My jacket has been soaked with rain and yes this has helped but when I look at Holts jackets; he always seems to get that collar thing nailed.

Hey Paul,

Couple of options

1) you can thoroughly soak the collar in hot water and then leave it to dry clipped into the shape you want. (Careful how you clip it as the marks may show).

2) You can shape it with a steam iron.

Done both before. Don't be scared! :)

The iron may flatten the grain a little but it will come back eventually.

It does actually look like the famous first shot of him in the jungle, the collar is flat like that. But I know what you mean about it.

Jason

Great sugestions there; I am gonna try at least one of them; It is not a major thing for me, but I do feel that the jacket looks better with the collar sorted out.

Thanks for your reply Jason; I appreciate your help. I know that you are very clued up about the jacket thing.

God bless you,

Paul.

what I did, and that's the only thing I did to my colar, was take the tip on the right-hand side in my left hand and the tip on the left-hand side in my right and pull both of them towards the middle of my chest.

After doing this a few times the leather of my colar remembered not to look like something of of an Elvis costume.

I hope this makes sence to you.

To be more descriptive, on my first jacket I soaked the entire collar all the way through and then pulled the collar down slightly while wearing it for about 4 hours as it dried. This fixed the bat wing problem, but left me with a collar that was so SA it looked bad. It really does stretch it out a lot if you're not careful. For my current jacket I just got it a little bit wet and didn't mess with it. The problem isn't completely gone, but it helped and I'll probably do it again closer to jacket season before I wear it again.

The stretching problem was something I encountered on a non-Indy leather jacket. That's why I didn't aply any water while doing this. If you wet leather it will stretch rather easily, so your best bet, if doing what I did, is doing it dry.

Unfortunately, the images belonged to MK and were housed on his own personal site, which he has long since removed.

Let me look around and see if I can track them down somewhere.

I'm interested...

I don't have my jacket yet (well, I've had two, and sent them back for varying reasons) and may need this help on mine as well...

BTW
This is the thread he's talking about.

I seem to recall that you just need to fold/roll the collar tips under, and let it sit.

I just searched all of the archived paged of MK's site via the Way Back Machine and turned up nothing regarding the collar fix.

There are a lot of great memories on his page though - it's worth a look.

I'll see if I can duplicate it and take pictures. It's easy enough. You just need a rubber-band. I personally think that all you need to do is roll your collar in your hand every time you put it on (when new). Pretty soon your collar will look decent enough.

I've used the clip method. Instead of soaking in hot water, I used Pecards, got it nice and lathered up then put an old T-shirt over the top of the collar and used binder spring clips (springloaded clothespins work too) and let it sit for a few days. The shirt did a pretty good job of preventing marks from the clips, and I have a "new" collar.

I've done it on 2 jackets, one was an old Wilson's cowhide that had the collar laying too flat (like yours) and my wested HH that had the collar standing up too much, with me wanting it flatter. Both have worked with permanent results.

I've trained my collars by wetting the collar and then folding it in half along the whole collar. I leave the jacket on the floor zipped up and with the collar folded over night and in the morning it behaves itself.
