(Like many) I'm a sucker for good ol' Streets of Cairo...
(Or as I sometimes call it: "Drinkin' With a Monkey")

I prefer the "Idol Grab" bash but I am leaning toward my new hat having a less specific Raiders dress look that a few vendors offer.

I'm with Mitch, I've gotta give it to Streets of Cairo. That bash just has character. It says, "I've been there, through the good times and bad times."

When Indy turns around in the opening scene of Raiders, the first time we see Indy in the fedora, with the backdrop of Kipu Falls; that bash is my favorite.

Raven and/or Well of Souls:

The hat looks... I don't know... like... ACTION! in those scenes.

It's a tie for me, between Idol Grab and Well of Souls / Cobra.

Though I'm not a fan of the tight Raiders pinch, I'd have to say the Drinkin' With A Monkey (a.k.a Streets of Cairo) bash is my favorite.

My favorite would be the Idol Grab bash. The Raven bash is my second favorite.

I like the Raiders look best. I understand there are several variants, but I like (and ned) the taller crown height, and the sharp pinch.

when I get my Christie's, I hope to e able to do my first bash correctly, to at least get something beytween raiders and ToD style bash- maybe slightly looser on the pinch than Raiders, but not much...

We'll see how I do here soon... :?

I'm flattered that so many of you got a kick out of "Drinkin' With a Monkey"...
Please, feel free to use it as often as you like. My small gift to so many of you who have educated, enlightened and entertained me on so many occasions here in this forum.
:)
For a while now I've referred to it that way (although, mostly to myself, my wife and my son, I'll admit...)
But I thought this was worth noting:
When I ordered my Magnoli HJ and included some specifics about what Movie-Look/Style/Bash I was asking for, I referred to it as the DWAM (well, I mean, I SAID "Drinkin' With a Monkey") and wasn't asked for clarification by either Mag OR Steve.
8)
I mean, OF COURSE I understand that they immediately "got" what I was referring to... after all, they ARE just maybe a bit familiar with the film...
I just thought it was kinda neat that they were so instantly in tune with what I was saying.
See, I'm kinda old school so I was writing letters and asking questions of hat companies and whip makers long before there ever was an Internet (I know many of you here ALSO fit that description)... I still remember the frustrating practice of trying to make them understand the details and nuances I was looking for in the gear I wanted.
To me the fact that so many of us here can speak with each other in this immediately understood "Raiders Lingo" and BE understood by the Vendors who fuel this love/hobby/obsession/whatever it might be to YOU... is just...
Well, it's just great.
:D
(And I'll tell you THIS, the afternoon I was perusing these boards and ended up mumbling to myself "Now, what the Heckle and Jeckle does 'SA' stand for?" seems like a LONG time ago...)
All the Best,
Mitch

I think that it would be safer to write "heck" in that spot

What's great about the "drinking with a monkey" description is that it's accurate and funny at the same time :D

After enough drinks they all start to look like monkeys...

I hate to admit it, but in the morning, some I have taken home look a LOT like monkeys...

J!m:
Can I assume they're free to call you "a conceited ape"?
And gwyddion:
Advice duly noted - and taken (Though, NOT without some Artistic License being taken... After all, in my frustration, what I REALLY said that day was FAR from appropriate for THESE boards.)

Um, not an ape per se...

I do have to admit they were handy with a banana!

Oh MAN!!!
Dude, I think I know what's tipping your Jeep over! It's your huge, unbalanced sense of humor!
J!m, if you and I EVER end up at one of these Summit-things, I'm buying you a drink for THAT line!
(And then, as fast as I can I'm gettin' outta the way to make room for the long line of "chimp-chicks" & "gibbon-girls" waiting to buy you your SECOND, THIRD & FOUTH drinks!)
Thanks for the laughs, man!

No problem- that's my job...

Since you are in NS, I suspect it is closer to drop by the house, rthe than us both to drive so many hours to swap war stories...

Actually, the next meeting in New Hampshire should cause you to make travel plans... I want to be there once it is finalized!

I lean more towards the straighter hats in Raiders. The SOC hat is great, but so hard to pull off with the bulging felt. The thing is, good felt does not bulge much. That would have been anathema to an old hatmaker. To turn out hats that droop and bulge. But, it is attractive to us Indy fans.

The famous Cobra hat is an oddity. It is an oddity because the picture that most show as the cobra hat, is turned back to where it was before it was creased off center. So, the front pinch is more over his left eye. This undistorts the brim somewhat. I have alot of requests for this hat. And many don't realize the hat has lost its turn, and who would wear the pinch over their left eye generally speaking? So, you center up the hat, and it no longer looks like the cobra hat!!

I also like the hat he is wearing when he is hanging off the front of the truck. Deep dents but still very square. Fedora

I would have to say the streets of Cairo bash, but lately I have really been digging the Raven Bar style as well.

Idol Grab by far. It looks "nicest" to me, very clean and neat.

I should add that these are not my favorites to wear, exactly. The severe Raiders crease doesn't generally look right on me (I feel), so I modify these bashes to be a little less "razor sharp." Often, I end up with an Idol Grab with an LC pinch!

Chewie, I haven't seen a hat on you YET that didn't look great, so clearly your instincts are on the mark!

I love the hat from the Idol Scene - the hat seems to have such a great shape - really pointed or something, especially the brim. I think its possibly also beacause its my favourite scene in the whole movie and so I can't not associate it with Indy and adventure.

Where I'm from, SA stands for South Australia. When I first read the boards, I thought, "Gee, a lot of these guys are really keen on getting a South Australian hat. Akubra must be really popular".

After a while I realised I had to think like an American to work out all these different initials. Obviously, SA stands for Semi-Automatic

Oops, the thread's about what style hat I like....

That's a hard choice to make. I really like the idol grab, but also the Raven... so many choices...

I realize I posted a comment earlier and didn't anwer the question!

If I could decide which was my favorite, my hats would probably last longer! I love the look of that hat from the beginning of the movie to the end, but I think my preference most often is the Raven Bar style, and Well of the Souls. The Well of the Souls image I am thinking of specifically is a production photo with Indy holding a torch raised in his right hand. I'm sure many of you know what I'm talking about, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I've always liked the SoC bash, but as of late I've started to take a liking to the Well of Souls bash.......and the Raven Bar bash.

Is there a good site that shows the subtleties of the various bashes in pictures and/or screen caps?

Truck chase bash (which is the just the Cairo hat anyway, I simply liked it better at this stage in the film.)

Oddly enough I rather like the hat in the Flying Wing scenes, at least for an adventure hat. That look of 40 miles of bad road. The hat looks as exhausted as he does.
For a quasi around town & adventure hat I loce the SOC mourning bar scene.

Cheers!

I've never been able to settle on a single bash, but if suspended by my thumbs and forced to choose just one, I'd probably go with the opening scene. That's the defining image of the character for me.

Add one more to the idol grab bash. That's what I've got ordered because although a lot of the others are pretty nice, if you actually want to wear your fed in more of a "dressed up" manner, having things all a little warped just doesn't quite work in my opinion. Keep it nice and straight!

Mine would be the Ravenbar, it has some nice side profile shots. Especially the brim curl on the left side near the back of the hat.

Definetly Raven Bar or Well of Souls :D
