I went to a hatter and had my Mag HJ stretched (No issues)...the hatter complimented me on the quality of the hat, and instructed me to rest the crown of the hat on a tabletop when not being worn.

I've heard so many different views on this...Hat Rests....Face up with the brim hanging over the table, crown on the table, and a hat rack

Which method is best for the hat?

When not worn, I just keep mine in the boxes they came in.

If I'm traveling and that option is not available, I simply put it on a table or a chair, with the hat upside down.

In the case of my Indy hats, I usually find or make a hat bow large enough to fit the shaped brim. On other hats, the box they came in will do.

If it's a hat that I am wearing a great deal, I put in on a small hat rest (a black plastic think that the hat sits on like it would on your head, and the brim doesn't touch anything). If it's going to sit a while, I box it to keep the dust to a minimum.

Finally, if I'm not in a position to do those two things, I rest it on the crown, never the brim. That would be a big no-no. I know Indy does it in the movies, but when you have off-screen professionals to shape it, and no need to worry about ruining the hat quickly, then you can sit it on it's brim all you want.

Hat racks and coat racks are ok for short periods of time, but the more a hat hangs on that, the more time gravity has to tug-a-war with the rack. Long term use will slowly distort a hat.

Seriously Bending Oak?...U think a coat rack is the best way to go? (I dont exactly have that much free table space for the alternatives!!)

I use a coat rack and it works out great. The best part is that it takes up so little space.

the only time my hat is right side up is if it's sitting on-top of another hat...that is sitting on top of another hat.....and so on. the bottom hat is a hat that i really don't care about (but is sitting on my darth vader helmet).

the other place i put my hat on is a wreath holder. i just rest the sweat on the top of it so its hung sideways.

btw - never do what indy does - rest the hat on the brim - unless you don't mind getting the taper and have a wardrobe department who could toss you another hat

Thank you all...no wonder why the old hatter at JJ hats grabbed my arm when he told me to place the hat with the crown on the tabletop !!!!

The hat now sits on the table with its crown resting on it....I LOVE THIS HAT...and dont want to see it loose its mojo!!!

If I had my AB it would be sitting on my little vintage globe I have, when not being worn, but I dont have it cause its on its way to steve for a reblock.

I keep my favorite hats in their original boxes. You have to be careful that there is enough space between the brim and the top of the box so that the brim does not become deformed. Also, when you stack boxes, sometimes the tops of the boxes can cave in enough to deform the brims. So, even though it's not the best way to conserve space, I try not to stack too many hat boxes in one pile.

With my less favorite, hats, I simply stack them upside down with the least favorite on the bottom. Except for the dust that accumulates on the undersides of the brims, I've had no problems with this method of storage.

I use the same thing for my AB. It works out great!

I have a few of those myself.

You have to understand that the hat I wear now is one of my own. I was wearing one of my AB's and kept getting "is that one of yours" by a couple of people. if something happens to it I can just make another, so I take very little care of it. What better way to test it.

heres where I keep mineready for action!(or a trip to the shops! )

Hey, if a craftsman doesn't use his own wares, how can I trust him to make me something for use?

That speaks volumes to me of his craft, as he believes in what he makes and uses them himself.

I got one of those hat stands from Todd for my Camptown. When I get my ABD, not sure yet.

I have to agree - absolutely nothing wrong with a coat rack or hallstand.
That's - at least - where I put my hat, when not wearing it ...

Same here !

At home the hat sits on the perfect head-shaped stand... a head! Well actually a life-size replica skull - soon to be replaced with a replica Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull.
When I'm away from home but sat in, say, a restaurant the hat stays on my knee. This is a habit I picked up from my dad, it guarantees you won't ever leave it behind.
When I'm out in the wilds I usually have a chin strap attached - from which the hat will hang in my tent at night. If it gets a real soaking and it needs to dry off outside, I have a small bull-dog clip with a large keyring through the holes. The back of the brim goes in the clip and the keyring goes over a convenient tent-pole, tree branch etc.
The clip also doubles up as a good hanger when I'm in under-equiped hotels.
