I've "redyed" a US Wings jacket... that is, I actually sprayed a new darker finish over the original russety brown, with good success. Fiebing products are good, I've used them on other projects like when I hand glazed a capeskin Willis & Gieger type A-1 not long ago. Anyway, to color the USWings Indy, I used a product from Meltonian called Nu-Life color spray for leather. They have many different colors to choose from. The jacket had been washed basically and had no shine to the surface, other than that I didn't prepare the surface in any special way...no sanding or special pre-coating or anything. It's an aerosol spray that's basically paint for leather. I sprayed a light coat all over the jacket so that the russet would wear through quickly, which it did... but you can controll how much you apply and go back and re-do it anytime you want. Alot of the old leather jackets you see were basically done the same, only it was done before the hides were cut into patterns.

When done properly it doesn't look like anything abnormal is on the jacket, of course if you sprayed it heavy and let it pool up it would look weird. It's about $10 per can, only one was needed for mine - alot less than a professional doing it, if you could find someone I bet they'd use the same method. Look at the jacket that's being used to mock up US Wings TofD jacket... that's the one I did. Like I said, I sparayed on only a light coat of color so that the original russet would come through - but it was quite a bit lighter originally.

I think then, that there would always be a possibility of the top coat wearing through to reveal the darker color, which most people don't care for. I'm not sure you'd be able to dye the leather completely through.

the miltary used to redye a-2 jackets, I think having the darker come through after some wear would look really cool.
