Newbie whip owner here...

Where is the cheapest/best place to buy pecard's whip conditioner? Is it best to buy a lot at once, or will it go bad over time? Also, are there any other accessories or maintenance supplies I should have on hand?

I usually get Pecards from David Morgan, but you can buy directly from Pecards website (URL below).

I have not found that Pecards "goes bad," but a little goes a long way. Since it is readily available, there is no need to buy more than you will use in a reasonable amount of time- depending on the number of whips you have, how often you use them, weather conditions, etc.

As for other maintenance supplies- extra crackers, extra falls, a fid, a brush and a cloth for removing dirt/grit.

What is a fid, and what is it used for?

Fids are one of the most surprisingly handy things to carry in your whipbag... They help replace falls of course, but they are also really great for helping to loosen up the nasty knots you'll get in your popper and/or fall when practicing.

where do you suggest gettin um from Lauren?

You can either find them from places like Tandy Leather, or if you're a cheap SOB like me, just do what I do, and go get an awl, leather punch, or an icepick and take it to a belt grinder to "Round off" the tip, so it's not so sharp, (you can do the same thing with a phillips-head screwdriver, but it takes more work.)

Most of the time, I just use the awl from my Leatherman to get knots out of falls and poppers, but sometimes, (ESPECIALLY when changing falls,) a Fid is MUCH more useful.

These are the two fids I use now, and each serves slightly different but basically the same purpose. The top one I think is from Tandy Leather, and I'm not sure where the bottom one came from... I sort of stole it from Paul back when I first started making whips, and tied the knot on it for decoration and grip about 6 months ago.

The easiest place I know of to get them is Tandy Leather (they've got an online store). Really though, any leather store should have them, or like Dan said, you can pretty easily modify an ice pick or something like that. Anything that will end up pointy enough to poke between two tight leather strands, but not so sharp that it will poke a hole in a leather strand easily.

just checked Tandy's prices and they are the same as what Joe stain is selling them for....... might as well support a whipmaker )

The top fid in Lauren's picture is an Osborne fid and is a bit different from the one that tandy sells. The fid that Tandy sells has a very sharp point and while that may not be a bad thing for untying knots in your cracker, however if you are doing any work on your whip you might want to dull it a bit.
