Waterproof pocket

Post by AdaminNYC »

Hey all,
When I ordered my second Wested jacket, they overlooked my request for a second inside pocket. (Great jacket makers, not the best email readers.) So with fall approaching, I'm planning to have a local tailor put one in for me.

Then I got an idea: wouldn't it be nice if I had the pocket made to be waterproof. That way if I got caught in the rain, I could guarantee to keep my cell phone and iPod dry. Cowhide is water resistant, but a bad enough downpour...

So, any ideas of how to make a pocket waterproof but still usable? I don't think a plastic pocket would last long. I had considered gore-tex, but where does one buy a sheet of gore-tex?

Any ideas?

I suppose you could always buy a cheap, second-hand gore-tex jacket, and then cut out however much material you need from it? ;)

Maybe you could look at the sort of waterproof pouches you can get in camping supply shops? They might be made of a material could magpie or have a clever closure method.

Something like this, perhaps?

How about carrying around a ziplock bag in your pocket until you need it?

it would need to be one of those REAL Ziplock bags....the kind you can use to sneak Jim Beam into a UGA game with...not that I've ever done that kind of thing

Adam, I think that's a great idea actually.. I'd line the inside of the pocket with the standard cotton though for more of a normal feel.

Hey, Minnesota! Thanks, man....

Much obliged!

Seriously, though....you would want any inside pockets to be comfortable, lay flush against your clothing, not "rub" any way or "bulge" and mess up the line or comfort. Concealed carry handgun holsters fitted for under jacket wear take this kind of thing into consideration all the time and design accordingly.

Michaelson and I both always liked just the standard inside pocket Wested does, the security of a zipper on it, and truly I think a GOOD quality Ziplock back (you know, yellow and blue make green....) that you keep folded up until you actually need it would be the most convenient, cost-effective, and less complicated way to achieve what you're after.

Maybe it's just the boy scout in me, but simple and easy to achieve states of constant readiness always seemed the best route to me...something you can have on hand at a moment's notice.

Anyway....just a thought.

I wholeheartedly support the Ziploc bag idea. On all my hunting/camping trips, I keep a Ziploc bag in my pocket, stuffed with matches, dryer lint (fire starter, the best ther is and cheap!), and above all, TP! Three items that absolutely must stay dry until need!
