I'm still waiting for mine, custom Temple of Doom from Peters Bros. It should be here soon, the fact that a UPS truck caught fire in the next county from me (really close) makes me unnerved a bit. Especially since it is coming via UPS.
sorry

Hey don't worry about the quality, the hat looks great. Makes me even MORE impatient waiting for mine to arrive in the mail... again, assuming it was lucky and avoided the UPS toaster.

They told me 6 - 8 weeks for mine, ordered 3 weeks ago. After 2 weeks it was ready to be shipped at the end of that week. Shipped out last Friday (feels like just yesterday it was ordered.
Amazing customer service hopefully I get to see a great quality hat on my head.
####, I just had one of those moments where I saw a word (weeks), and I said to myself, is that a word? Why does that happen?

I have saved up enough $ and hope to be ordering mine soon. I have chosen to go with Peters Bros. I am just not sure about weather to go with stiff rabbit blend or soft rabbit blend. Any opinions?

I'm going with soft for mine, probably more comfortable in the grand scheme of things.

I have a Peters Brothers fedora in the stiff blend, and when they say stiff, they mean it. It is like a helmet. It has a taller crown than most Indy hats and a slight taper. Having said all that, I will have to add that I really love it. It ranks up there with my favorites, if it were only a little bit softer.
Nevertheless, you chose well. PB makes a Great hat.
Many Thanks
Randall

I really don't think any of those things are true. Any quality hat you get will last a lifetime. You'll have to get it reblocked, but it'll just keep on trucking. It won't be more durable - I'd say quite the opposite - since it isn't as flexible you'd be more likely to damage the felt if you sat on it by accident or something. It may keep it's shape better, that I'll give it, but then it won't develop any character. :junior: -M

I got my Peters Bros. fedora yesterday, Temple of Doom style, and I am really happy. Had to get used to wearing something that actually fits, but it was worth the wait.
Pic quality not that good, I need to clean my laptop camera lens off a bit.

Well, actually, yes, that IS true.
There is more stiffner in the felt, and therefore will help the hat not only fight its constant attempt to return to it's original cone shape (unless the felt is 'dead'), it also helps the hat shed water as there is more product suspended in the felt that keeps water from penetrating. It's less likely to get crushed or dented in wear and tear....so in a way, it DOES help keep you from sending your hat back to a hatter for rebuild as often as a soft hat would. So, your Dad is right using that chain of thought.
That said, though, it WILL soften up with wear, use, and exposure to the elements, and be JUST like a soft hat is right out of the box....so it's the old 'turtle and the hare' discussion. Eventually they both get to the same place....just at different times.

I agree with Michaelson. Why else would cowboy hats be stiff? Now those hats often take a beating, ask any rough stock guy or any real ranch hand. It does hold a crease much better, that's why you have to use steam, it won't bend otherwise. I still have the old American Hat Co. hat my dad gave when I was 8 and it looks brand new still. Now my son wears it! I am starting to feel just a little bit grown up.
When the time comes I am going for their bullet proof.

I've got a Peter Bro's myself and am very happy with it. I did have to stretch it just a touch. (probably a poor measure job by me.) But, very happy with the hat.
Congrats

The more I look at these hats the more I want one
The more I read about them the more confused as to which way to go I become
I only live 20 minutes drive from where the original was made (Cambridge uk) would that be my best bet you think?
*scratching my head a little here....
Nice photo's by the way.....

If you are going to go the route of Herbert Johnson, do not purchase it from SAB. Pick up the Magnoli and get a completely handmade HJ.

With hats, it comes down to preference and how you are going to use them. Thicker felt (different animal blends) and hat stiffener ad up to a hat for harder wearing. But not everyone needs or wants that. It’s like a lambskin jacket. Lambskin will hold up fine for “urban” commandos. With a softer, thinner felt you get a hat that some would define as more elegant. The original Raiders hat was made from thin felt. To be honest, the hat company that made a hat with a felt closest to that (at least to my eye) was Optimo. But only one movie out of four had a hat like that. The felt that Fedora uses is the highest quality felt used in an Indiana Jones movie. He can make a Raiders hat that looks like a Raiders hat to boot. It just doesn’t have the same characteristics of a Raiders hat. But that’s the trade off. It will hold up better than an original Herbert Johnson Raiders hat. All the originals that we’ve seen have tapered down to look like TOD hats. Cheers
PS- This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a thin high quality felt. It’s just that you are unlikely to find it today.

Yep. Mercury felted hats went the way of the dodo bird.
