It's here!!!!!
If you haven't noticed, I've felt it necessary to try and buy, at least, one hat from the several terrific hat-builders that are active on this site. Today I received my second hat from Ken at Camptown Hats. It's a 1957 Legend, #007, and it is a beauty.

It has a taller crown, which I LOVE, and a darker felt than the Fieldmaster, my other hat from Camptown. All you guys waiting on a Legend will be very pleased. I know what you're going to say, "This thread is worthless without photos". As soon as I can get the bash I want, the photos will follow shortly.

I want to thank Ken for another wonderful addition to the Camptown line of hats. I don't know how you are are the legal game, but when it comes to hats, you are first-class. I'm here to tell you, we can use more hat-makers and fewer attorneys, in my humble opinion.

I will post photos shortly and hope others will also, as they receive their Legends.

Many Thanks
Randall

The pics came through, and... Wow! Looks great!! I should be getting mine (#003) on my door step tomorrow. I will share pics as well. Time to dig out the camera!

So, how does the felt feel in comparison to the Fieldmaster? Is the felt floppier & thinner or about the same. Ken told me it was much softer & more lush than the Fieldmaster, but I'm wondering about the soft floppy feel. Like I said, is it more lie a vintage hat or similar to the Fieldmaster?

I suppose I will be finding out tomorrow after work. I can't wait! More photos please!! Some outdoors would be fantastic. :D

Cheers!

Daniel....
I want to thank you. Because of you and the photos you posted of your Fieldmaster, I decided to buy my Camptown Fieldmaster. I became a Camptown "Groupie".

In my opinion, the felt is of the same "feel" as the Fieldmaster. The main differences, as I noted, is the taller, CS crown, and the color of the felt.

It is a Camptown, and I'm sure you'll love it.

Please do post photos on this thread. I can't wait to hear your analysis and appraisal.

Many Thanks
Randall

You're most welcome Randall and thank you for the invite to share on your thread. I will be sure to do that once I get some pics. It's going to Disneyland this weekend for sure.
How does the new logo look in the liner?

Cheers!

You are in the mix Bob, have no fear. I am trying to work as quickly as my afterhours time permits on styling. It will ship soon !

Highest Regards !

BTW: on the felt, the difference may be most palpable to me who works on lots of these lids. It is softer since I reduced the % of shellac in the body. I.E. will break in faster. I am also pleased that the new, darker shade is well recieved.

Uh oh, Littlest Jersey just woke up. ! Bottle time !

Thanks
Ken

Not to hijack a thread, but Ken what's the best way to ask you questions, email or PM? I sent an email last week (8/4) and never heard back.

A shot of the back & bow side would be very appreciated as well. Still digging on what I see here. Mine will be here this afternoon so I will be beating a quick path home after work, & I think I will hear that angel chorus in the background when I see the box & open it. :D

Cheers!

Mama Mia, Jersey, that's a fine hat. I may yet be able to afford one -- may the savings jar at home fill to overflowing just by the power of my will alone! :P

Alright folks here is my review of #003. Holy smokes!! This is one fine hat. Soft right out of the box. Not only to the touch put in pliability. Shapes great this way and it still holds the shape put in without any steam. It is decidedly darker than the Fieldmaster & the crown is taller but the proportions are perfect. The fit is perfect right out of the box. No padding or tweaking needed at all.
All in all a top quality hat from a top drawer stand up guy. Thank you so very much Ken for this wonderful hat. You have outdone yourself for sure.

Here are a few pics:

You can tell by the photos, the more you wore it, the better it settled on your head. By the 3rd photo, it's taking a natual shape from the handling.

VERY VERY nice!

HIGH regards! Michaelson

Gotta agree with Michaelson, looks even better the more you wore it. Wow. Great lid. The swoop in the third pic  :notworthy:

Thanks Gang! Most appreciated.

Actually the lat picture is From Saturday late afternoon & the other two are from Sunday, one at breakfast and then an afternoon shot in the Indy Ride que.

It is getting much softer and feeling more a part of me each day. You are right there Michaelson, it is taking on a distinctive shape all it's own after handling for a while. The swoop doesn't com from a turn but how I tug on the brim to seat it down on my noggin. Funny huh?
This one has that highly sought after straight sides. I know that in these few shots it looks like it may have a taper to it, but trust me, it doesn't. In fact I would say it has a bit of a reverse taper due to my long oval head.

Cheers!

Well, thus far it is doing quite well in hot weather as well. It has been near 100° this past week and the perforated sweatband is allowing a nice breeze under the lid.

Thank you Ken!! :D

Is the 1957 comparable in price with the 1936?

This hat has won me over just from the pics alone. I always wondered what the perforations looked like for the Camptown hats. And if they do let your head breath in hot weather, it might be wonderful to where here in Hawaii... Okay, I'm sold :D .

The 1936 Fieldmaster is $175 I believe, and the 1957 Legend is $210 respectively. Be sure to give Ken a call and discuss any options you may want for either hat and to be 100% sure on the pricing. Honestly I highly recommend either hat. Some of the best bang for the buck for sure.Glad you guys like what you see. I have been completely happy with what I've gotten.

Cheers!

The Camptown hats are rugged and very good looking. I haven't seen one yet that wasn't a beauty! Great work Ken, your hats are really wonderful.

I can't order a hat every other week much as I would like to, but I will be ordering a Camptown in the future no doubt.

Sorry DJ and others, but things have been a little hectic. We had to prepare for a visit from Ike last week. He was originally scheduled to make landfall about 30 miles from us, so we were a bit frantic trying to get ready. As Jimmy Buffet's song title goes, "Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season", isn't an easy proposition. Fortunately for us, and unfortunately for others, Ike turned north to the east of us and went ashore at Galveston. I'm sure you've seen the catastrophe along the Texas Coast. I've driven those streets and roads many times in my work travels and my heart and prayers go out to all affected, many who have lost everything.

Anyway, I'll post more photos soon, but I still love my Legend, even more so, since it's getting broke in.

Great looking hats, fellas! I want mine so bad I can practically taste it.

Buda471, first off, great hat, no question there, however, it looks like you need to make the dents in your bash a little deeper.

Wow, that is probably the most commas I've ever used in one sentence.

Yeah I was thinking the same.... I just don't know how to...

So Buda, since September, have you deepened the bash or do any other tweaks to your lid. Please share the results.

My Legend just before Christmas. I had changed out the ribbon to one of Todd's offerings as I like the look of the Petersham better overall. Adds more contrast.

Again, that is a very nice hat. You look quite happy there, great shot. I like the ribbon change, too. How does the bow look on the new ribbon?

Posted: Thu Jan 29, 2009 10:40 pm
by DanielJones
Thanks Venkman, most appreciated. Yes, very happy. The bow looks much better now. I used the Dalexs method & did a proper job of it. The thread I used was a spot on match for the color of the ribbon & is basically invisible. Looks like the ribbon & bow is just there.
I'll see if I can find a pic of that side of the lid to show off the bow. The change out was dead simple & took me all of about a half an hour cutting, ironing & sewing.

Cheers!

Hey Venkman, here are a few shots of the new ribbon.

Again, I'm rather happy with the results. I had originally tried this on my Fieldmaster, because after about 3 1/2 years the ribbon had sun faded to the point of blending in with the hat. Once I took it off you could really see the difference in color on the inside of the ribbon. I may recycle the ribbon & bow on a project campaign hat that I want to redo with a new sweatband & brim shape.

Cheers!

Dan
