Looks like it has a bit of taper to it. For my money I'd go for the Fed IV

The Christy's just looks more Raiders to me. It probably won't be as durable as the Federation, but looking at the Christy's thread, I can't think of a better choice for a Raiders hat in that price range.

I agree, and if color is important to you the Christys excels in that department. I don't own a Fed IV yet so I can't make a direct comparison, but from the photos I've seen the Feds seem ideal for a CS look.

What are the characteristics/qualities both good and bad of this fur felt fedora? Is it strictly a rabbit felt? Is that the appeal of the Fed IV is that it looks more like a CS offering, or maybe that depends on the styling? Thanks.

Good and bad can be subjective terms, but in my opinion the best characteristic is what a great looking hat you get for the money. It may actually be an HJ with a different label and a much lower price. I found mine completely trouble-free and easy to shape, and either the Light Sable or Sable colors are pretty close matches to the film-used HJ's. The rabbit felt of the Christys is also very soft and floppy.

On the minus side, there is some taper in the crown, but oddly, it still looks "right" to me and many others who have bought this hat. I guess it depends on which scenes you refer it to. I am personally a fan of the TOD hat, and the Christys suits that look perfectly. But I've also seen some terrific looking Raiders bashes put into it.

The big question with these hats is longevity, but in my opinion, for the price it's a sensible risk. If you intend to take the hat on long treks and wear it in all kinds of harsh weather conditions, then one of the more rugged Feds might be the better choice in this price range. And again, if the CS look is what you are after, in my opinion one of the Feds, styled properly, would be better than the Christys.

Jack,

Is there anything out there that would lead you to that conclusion, evidence, etc? Just curious.

That information came from posts by Fedora on the first page of this thread:

One of the reps at The Movie Shop sent me this info:

Fur Felt Adventurer
- Rabbit Fur
- Brand is THE MOVIE SHOP, our own hat makers
- Fur Felt specs are not Raiders, more close to TEMPLE/CRUSADE- lower crown, wider brim
- Hat comes open crown you have to style it yourself

Wool felt Adventurer
- Wool Felt version, also our own brand, it has the RAIDERS specs- Higher crown
- Hat comes open crown you have to style it yourself

If you get the Adventurer form Hornets it's pretty much the same price for US buyers. For UK guys you pay £6/$12 postage.

The Christys' is a thinner floppier felt, in comparison the Fed is a bit like a bowler hat or cowboy hat. I like the softer Christys'. Some will like the heavier feel of the fed.

I also showed the Christys' to some one who has HJ for about 5 years ago, they went visibly pale when they realised it was the same hat for about a third to a quarter of the money, and this was their own conclusion.

If you want a classic trilogy hat you cannot get a fed too look the ammount of right the way the Christy's does. The christy's is the same as a HJ without the brand name. Photographic evidence shows the Christy's makes a killer original indy hat, where the fed comes only close to the 4th movie. Besides as it was posted here, the other site offers cheaper shipping.

This is strange, because I know The Movie Shop used to sell the Christys. I just recently did a search for "Christys" on themovieshop.com and what came up was the same page you posted the link to above, only you couldn't see the liner logos anymore.

It appears they may now be selling their own hats, but are still using the old photos of the Christys, with the logos whited out. I can tell the photos are the same because there is a speck of dust you can see on the hat in some of those photos (at the bottom of the ribbon in the front, just off-center). That speck was also there when the hats were advertised as Christys and you could see the Christys logo in the liner.

I would make sure you are seeing photos of the hat you are actually going to get before you buy from The Movie Shop.

Might want to check with Christy's first. I remember the movieshop trying to sell another vendors hats without consulting them first. They placed the button on their site and everything trying to sell these hats through them.

I didn't take it that way, Texan Scott, and it is interesting information-- just trying to help you find the right hat for you.

The Hornet rep's reply:

Thank you for your email. Regarding the similarity between HJ and Christys, we have been told they are quite similar but as we get all our hats directly from Christys' I couldn't tell you as we don't know, but I can confirm that the Adventurer hats are 100% rabbit fur and we send them open crown which is unbashed.

Which do you think makes the better hat in a Raiders style: light sable or sable?

Before that he would have answered to "light sable." He didn't weigh so much back then. It's the Canadian diet - back bacon and jellies. At least that's what I hear they eat...

Does the Orange County/Fullerton Bus #43 stop near your house, McFly? Or just by the auditorium and college?

All I can say about this is that I own vintage HJ's and a Magnoli HJ, and all of them are a lighter shade than the Light Sable Adventurer I also own. So, based on that, I would go with Light Sable. But the difference between the Light Sable and Sable shades of the Adventurer is so slight that it probably doesn't make much of a difference which one you get.

Well depending on which way you're coming from (probably N for you, since you're up there in the GWN) you'd have to take the S-bound bus and get off a- :-# [-o<
