Hi All,
making my own block, my question is how rounded should the top be, I've looked at the posts here about blocks and I'm not entirely sure how much I should sand the top. any input would be helpful, thank you in advance.

I'm surprised no one has commented here. I'd love to help out, but am far from an expert. Do you have any pictures or anything of what your final product will look like?

no,I'll try tomarrow of what I have I'm sanding the bottom right now, it was the only piece that was too small so I used I bondo/wood compound to finish the bottom piece.

I tell ya what, if you are working a common size and if time committed is not too great, you may just find yourself a market here....?

I've checked in on this topic a number of times, hesitant to pitch in because I have never made my own block but have been thinking about how I would do it. If it were me, I would keep the dome very shallow, so that when the hat is creased it maintains straight sides and keeps the centerdent from touching the top of the head. I have noticed that a hat with a lower crown can achieve a good Indy look if the dome is not to acute, while taller hats with too much never look right and still hit the top of your head.

You probably already knew that, but there you go.

I've made my own block, and just recently finished re-vamping a early '60s Resistol Western on it. I've been meaning to post some pics of both, as I bragged up my planned efforts on this forum some time ago; life gets a little busy sometimes! I will try to post the results sometime this week. But... beware! This chapeau is not QUITE Indy - more Indy-esque! More to come...

Regards, Andy

I was watching Raiders last night and was looking at Indy's fedora, I think my block might do the trick, without going too crazy on doming the wood, I'll post pictures as soon as I'm done sanding and tell me if I need to do anyhting else before I seal it up. I 'm going to try to be done by Thursday hopefully.
