New Target Indyish bag

I bought one of these to feel the Indy vibe while not quite having to commit to being called out for wearing the actual MK VII. Plus the big bulky buckles are pretty cool.

I'm looking at one on target.com and it look reasonable, but how big is it? Can it hold a laptop? It looks a little narrow. Thanks...

Why would anyone "call you out" for wearing a MKVII? It's not like it has "Indiana Jones" written on it and I doubt few people outside of the more than casual fans would have any idea it was from a movie. 99.9% of people would simply think it's just another surplus military item.
And I think a MKVII looks cooler than the Target bag.

I agree with Raider S! I get complimented on my MK VII all the time. Even sold one off my shoulder once. Not to an Indy fan but to a girl who wanted it for a purse.

I've had a person come up to me and say "Whoa, is that a gas mask haversack?" He didn't even know the Indy connection.

A Very Manly Purse

Just as I type this, I realize I should do some research. But -- if Indy carries his wallet in his jacket or trousers, the bag really isn't a purse. Men carried purses when they carried money in small pouches or bags. Comments anyone? And how much is that Target bag, anyway?

I once found out by chance that a girl who I rode the bus to and from high school with had a MkVI as a purse!! She said it was her GRANDPA'S!!!
(Tried to get it from her, but no luck.)
It's a nice looking bag, to be sure, but I don't think having the MkVII is anything to be "called out" for. And if somebody DOES call you out for wearing a MkVII, I'd shake their hand and ask what else they're into!

I had an Air Force Lieutenant say 'nice purse' to me at a govt conference once. Now, he and I are friends, and he was getting me back for saying 'nice pajamas' the last time he wore camo, but a Colonel overheard us and turned to stop us right there. Uh-oh.
"Lieutenant," he said, addressing my friend, "are you aware of what that item of equipment is?"
"Uh, no sir."
"That appears to be a WWII-era gas mask bag. British?", he asked me, and I just nodded, stunned that he knew, and quietly enjoying that he was raking my friend over this. I gathered enough nerve to push it over on my buddy: "This is in fact a British-made MKVII gas mask bag, yes sir."
"But son," he said, and I knew I was in trouble for something, because even as a civvy I don't get called 'son' much, "you appear to have
modified that equipment. Wasn't it issued w/ a webstrap?"
At this point, I'm reeling at the amount of detail this guy knows about this, but I gathered my wits as fast as I could: "Yes, sir, I removed the original webstrap to preserve the name of the original owner of this bag, and replaced it w/ an Enfield rifle sling."
"Good choice," he said, and turning back to my friend, "Lieutenant, that is NOT a purse."
After that, I didn't mind if anyone called it a purse, I just say 'yep' now, after that exchange I couldn't care less.
Oh, and my friend still wears his pajamas in public, and he still calls it my purse anyway.

Hey, at least it's not a fanny pack (or hip pack/bum bag for our friends across the pond).
Indiana Jerry -
Great story!

OK, here's the thing in my case. For one I started reading this site only about a month ago when I decided to put together this year's Halloween costume as Indiana Jones. Every year my wife and I build very detailed costumes for Halloween and I wanted the Indiana Jones to be just right. Little did I know how addicted I would get with it. Wow. This site should have a big WARNING label on it. So, for one, my MK VII is a replica version as my intention was for a single year's Halloween costume. So, with the Crystal Skull movie still out in theaters, wearing that bag feels like I am wearing a Halloween prop and with my costume bag, I pretty much am.
The bag I picked up at Target is fairly big for one (less purse-like) and with the "beefy" wide canvas strap it just feels a bit more comfortable to wear in public without it looking costume-like. The Target bag is $24.95 and by Mossimo for the people that are asking. The short version is I am pretty "closet" with my geek side and wearing, what to me is, costume gear would be odd. Another few months in this site might transform me though and I'll be like that woman wearing her Star Trek uniform with phaser to a jury trial! We'll see.

Admittedly, I am a little more conscious of not looking like a nutter while the movie is out, but the bag is a pretty safe item to wear alone.
Heck, a friend of mine was going to Japan for a trip, and his wife insisted he carry a bag of some sort so *she* didn't have to carry everything. He agreed only on the condition he could have 'something like Jerry's', because it didn't look like it came from the Gap.
I picked him up a MKVI and he still uses it. NOT an indy fan, btw, just a guy.

Yeah...remember my post about a MKVII being called a manpurse?! I didn't just open a can of worms, it was more like opening a truck-load of snakes
Let's not start that again!

I call it a murse.
Anyway, I saw this bag at Target, and if you are over 6'2" it's not long enough to look right. It was for that reason that I didn't get it.
It looks pretty good though.

Great looking bag! Can someone post a link to it on target.com? I've looked all over the site and can't find it.

just happened to have it in another tab while reading this, lol.
and Harris Steele, how big is "fairly big"? Is it "carry a laptop" big or just "bigger than indy's" big? Reason I ask is I"m in the market for a new bag for school.....

The bag itself is about 14 inches long and about 10 1/2 inches wide. It's about 3 1/2 inches thick and the shoulder strap is very adjustable for a pretty long sling down. When you buy it the strap is buckled to the shortest position though. I am 5' 10" and have it set on the next to longest buckle it slings even lower than we would generally wear the MK VII when going for that Indy look. Even if you set it so that the strap to its longest form the buckle works well because of the way the little belt loops work. It has an extra zippered pocket on the back and the inside zips with several different pockets inside but the primary space is open. I'll post some inside pics in a next post. I took several but it's a bit of a pain to link pics.
For a laptop, it might go in vertically depending on the size.

Many thanks for posting the link. It's a nice-enough bag, but at the price, are not other and better possibilities available for not much more?

Probably. There are all kinds of both military and military style bags like this. I was just sharing the one I found and bought. I thought it had an Indy feel without being too obviously Indy.

I'd check out
http://sportsmansguide.com. I had the very thought you did, YARVTON and that was the first place I looked. Found some pretty cool things, but not quite what I was looking for (something I could use for school). But for messenger bags and satchels and the like, it's a great place to look

While I haven't examined one of the Target bags, I'm just loath to buy one with a trendy logo attached. Even my few Polo Ponies are kept hidden under another garment.

No logo on it anywhere. Once you take the price tag off you'd be hard pressed to know who made it if you wanted to.
