Whip racks - now with photo goodness

Post by myrddin »

My first 'roo whip is in the mail as we speak, a beautiful 8" Strain. When it gets here, I'm going to build a wooden plaque to hang it loosely coiled on the wall, with my other collection of swords and weapons. The difference being that this is one weapon/tool that will be taken off the wall to use on a regular basis. :whip:

I've made a lot of the furniture around my house, everything from bookcases to end tables, headbard and frame for the bedroom to the desk I work from everyday. Woodworking is a hobby I inherited from my dad.

Aside from the asthetics, which I'm still refining and will continue after I receive my whip, the only definate design plan is to use a two peg system (each 1.5 inches in diameter) to hang the whip from.

As I was drawing out designs for the plaque, I suddenly wondered if anyone here would be interested in something to showcase their whip on the wall. I'm going to use a variation of a circle with some design elements for my own plaque, but what would you guys like to see in a whip plaque? A nice hard wood plaque, stained and finished or a crate design like something from the RotLA/CS warehouse?

Regardless, I will post post pictures of my wall plaque when I'm finished.

you know, I do some woodworking myself....
for instance i made a coffee table sword display case...

but i have been thinking of making some whip plaques myself, however instead of 2, i was thinking of using THREE dowels with the middle slightly higher to allow the whip to hang better and not droop around a dowel ya know?

i might throw something together once my babies arrive...

I too and awaiting my first Roo whip, a 9' Strain....

what style did you go for? raiderS? kotcs etc?

I think I'd be interested in something like this. I'd probably like something that looks really rugged - like that crate design - but would not be opposed to something stained and round, either. I'll be looking forward to seeing how this comes together - although I should be low on money for sometime, what with the QM and my Bernardo coming up... :?

iI thought about that too, except I don't know how to measure for the third. The whip will hang differently over time as it gets broken in, I figured the third peg wouldn't get used, so to speak. But I'm willing to be proven wrong. :)

No specifics. Just an Indy bullwhip. :)

I'll definately post the finished item once I finish it. Mine will be of the round variety, with the edges routered and some design cut from the center.

If there's enough general interest, I can mock up a crate prototype. I'll have to test out aging techiques for the wood, to make it look rough and rugged without anything to catch or cause friction on the leather. I'd hate to have something I build harm these beautiful whips I see posted around here.

As for price, I won't know until I get in the shop and do it. The building, assembly, and sanding won't take that long, once I get a template. The staining and finishing will be the time consuming part. Maybe I'll offer both the finished and unfinished versions, so if price is an issue people can stain/paint and finish it themselves.

Well, to do it right, you need hooks for the jacket and fedora, as well as a little shelf for the idol or grail :P

Maybe put it all behind glass with a little hammer and a sign that reads "Break in case of Adventure!"

ok ok, it has been a rough day :P

But I have thought of putting a nice single action revolver replica (cowboy pistol to most of you) with six silver bullets in a display case with a hammer saying "Break in case of Werewolf Attack".

 Nice!

Or even, "In case of Nazis, break glass."

Well myrddin, that's a beautiful whip you have there! As far as dowel numbers go, 2 is probably fine, you know? Minimalism = less chances for problems. You don't want to make it too complicated.

Got the whip yesterday. Wow, what a change from the old cowhide whips I grew up with (and the 6 foot one my inlaws got me a few years ago...)

I spent part of the afternoon cracking it (good thing I work from home). Since the area behind my town house is jusrt a narrow 6 x 15 swath of grass, I could only do forward throws, cattle man cracks, and some side flicks. I need to find a field to do some more over the head cicular throws.

Back on the thread topic, I started fiddling with the rack dimensions last nigh, taking a random board and drilling peg holes to experiment with spacing.

It lead to a question: how much to the whips loosen over time?

I want to design a rack that will hold a new whip and a lovingly broken in one too. Any thoughts by people who hang their whips coiled?

Since we're getting ready to move out of the country, it looks like I'm not going to be able to make whip racks for people like I was planning.

But since my personal one is almost done, I figured I'd post pics of it before I stain it.

The solid oak plaque is 15" in diameter with 1 1/4" dowels as pegs. To add a little class to it, I put brass caps on the pegs. The lower portion of the plaque has darker grain because I'm repurposing the wood from an old desk. Once it is stained, the grain will look the same.

You can see how much my whip has darkened in just under a month.

I like that!
great idea!

I was thinking of something similar, but slightly higher, centered between those two pegs, it put another to support the highest part of the coil... just to prevent sagging...
might be unncessary, but eh, who knows?
NICE plaque tho!

Thanks. It turned out a lot plainer than I originally imagined. I've been playing around with alot of different designs, everything from carved out centers to elaborate design cut outs to a replica of the Raiders' medallion. :) IN the end, I went with the basic circle and decided to let the whip be the focal point. :)

And Kooniu - Nothing besides an entire wall built out with pegs and shapes comes to mind. :) You could group similar whips together in three's (pyramid layout) or do groups of four in a dimand layout. Also, I'm not sure how to best hang stock whips... If you come up with a solution, be sure to post pics.

How about a wooden (with leather, velour or silk cover) half-circle to fully support the whip?

I don't have a whip; however I could probably make nice whip holders (if I had the time..)

Multi-whip hanger

Post by Canuck Digger »

Here's an idea; what about clothes rack that you see in department stores with 2 or 4 arms at an angle with a bunch of little balls for stoppers? They are made to hold hangers, but if one were to tie a length of leather 'round his/her whip and make an ordinary shoe-knot, one could plut the two loops from the knot around the little balls and there you are, a multi-whip hanger/display!

I found this one place online that has them with either 2 or 4 arms that can be adjusted at different heights. They are not that pricey if you have a lot of whips, but hardly worth it if you only have one or two.

Anyhoo here's the link: http://www.carlson-store-fixtures.com/c ... cts_id=846

It just occured to me that with a bit of patience and some wood, you could probably build yourself something like this for a fraction of the cost and adapt it to you living space. You could only have the slanted arm and have that on a wall, either coming straight out, or maybe even folding, so it could stick straight out or lie flat against the wall. Just thinking out loud...

Actually, for only $42.00 that is pretty cheap for a chrome-plated metal structure...

Wood would certainly be more (at least if I made it it would be)
