If you're looking for a hat that is low in price, then I think you should get a Akubra Federation IV.

jasonyong26, please resize your avatar to no larger than 100x100 pixels as per the site rules. Thanks.

I've seen the fur felt DPs become a more than decent hat but it requires work. To get it to look right you would need to reblock it. I know there was a thread a little bit ago where someone reblocked a fur DP and it looked pretty good. I think it was Indy Falco.

don't buy the DP. You will only be very unhappy with it and end up moving along to something else. It not even close in how it looks and of the poorest of quality. It won't last very long. Save yourself from thowing away money.

There are a lot of great options within many price ranges. Read through the forum and you'll find out plenty.

The federation IV seemed like a very nice hat, I have yet to see the quality in hand.
But I purchased a wool felt from themovieshop and I couldn't be happier, but i would want a better type of textile than wool felt, I would definitely save up for a higher quality of material next time. But very modestly priced.

The Christy's Adventurer and the Akubra Federation are both in the same price range as the fur felt DP and of a much higher quality. They are leaps and bounds above any DP. That is what I would go with. You can get a decent looking hat out of the DP with some work, but it is not worth it in my opinion. JUst opt for something much better and in the same price range, like the afore mentioned hats. You won't be dissapointed.

For a cheap hat, sure, the DP sounds fine, but that is IF you only intend on using it as a display (or occasional costume) piece. Somewhere in my closet, I have a DP from a trip to Disneyworld nine years ago, and yet it still is the same shape as it was when I put it there. Granted the last time I wore it was IN Disneyworld those nine years ago, and granted the brim "puffed up" after getting caught in a bit of rain when we were in Disneyworld, but otherwise it would do fine as a display piece if you're on a budget.
However, if you want something that you can actually wear out and about daily, then you might have to raise your budget at least to a hundred.

I like my Fur DP but yes, it does take some work. The first time I rebashed it, it looked decent and eventually I did reblock it with some pretty good results. Here's my thread on it:
viewtopic.php?t=31956
In a few weeks my DP will become secondary, however, as I recently ordered my JPD which I've heard nothing but good things about. I'd look into one of those. And if your looking for a good looking hat for around $100, I'd check out the Christy's Adventurer. There's a bunch of good pics in the "Christy's fur felt" thread

No, check out the various threads here related to Kepler, the Henry, the new Pennman hats, Camptown and the Akubra Federation IV. Find one that fits you buget and is to your liking. All superior to a Dorfman.
BTW, where did my Avatar go?

If it was larger that 100x100 pixels, it was probably deleted. If you've been following threads in the news and feedback sections, it turns out that the script we wrote to force avatars to be confined within the 100x100 pixel rule was making the site crawl. (It was initially created since folks weren't adhering to the rules, anyway!) Some folks had images over 1000 pixels being compressed into that space!
So in short, in order to help keep the site running smoothly, we turned off the script, which means all the previously compressed avatars went back to being huge and taking up screen space in threads. This means now we won't do it for you. If folks want an avatar, it has to remain within the 100x100 pixel rule, or it will be deleted as we come across them.

I have photoshop and illistrator - If you would like a custom avatar made or altered - send me your picture and tell me what you would like and I'll get it done ASAP.
As for the Dorfman? There's always Camptown and Akubra. MAYBE a few dollars more, but will last much, MUCH longer.

Found me one size 90 x 90 right off the bat, but you know I will eventually take you up on that, Ren. On your forum we can have most any size, right?
And don't forget the, "Henry," Not the one my Avatar has, Josh calls his hats "Henry," but rather the Factory made AB.
NOT the Dorfman!

Might be helpful to give the price of some of the hats recommended. At or close-to the hundred-dollar-mark are the Akubra Fed IV and the Christys Adventurer. Fed IV Deluxe is $160.00+. Camptown Fieldmaster is $170.00. And "Henry" is well-over $200.00. Oh, and the Keppler was $180.00, but I'm not sure the new version is at that price.

The akubra federation iv, is it made of rabbit or beaver, or composite material?

Both the standard and deluxe Fed IV's are made from rabbit fur; the felt the standard is made from is called "Imperial" quality, and the felt the deluxe is made from is called "Heritage" quality. "Heritage" is a finer grade fur felt which is, according to the Hats Direct website, "more stable over time and less prone to shrinkage and distortions such as the tapering of the crown," and "the closest rabbit fur grade to Beaver felt."

Should I get the Akubra Adventurer form the David Morgan Website?

It's not IDENTICAL to the Fed IV. Someone else can add comments, as I don't have one of the Adventurers, but the David Morgan price plus shipping would be nearly the same as Hatsdirect plus shipping. So unless you REALLY want the Adventurer....

jasonyong26,
I have both the Adventurer and the FedIV regular and they are both good hats. IMO the Fed looks better, has a squarer block and feels "smoother". It is also the more SA hat of the two. I would go for the Fed.
Cheers

The Adventurer is NOT the same hat as the FedIV. While both are Akubra hats, only the Federation was created with direct input from folks right here on COW and specifically for us Indy fans. What's more, is that the FedIV uses an actual pre WWII block, which makes it quite correct for the period.

Totally agree with you there Bink. The two hats are chalk and cheese. My Adventurer is my working thrash hat and it is very hard wearing indeed.
Cheers
