Really, REALLY Dumb Question, but...

...are using trees as targets for wraps a bad idea? I'll probably answer my own question by admitting that trees can be rough and abrasive (which is a big no-no), but I have read about alot of people using trees as targets for wraps and such.

Just pick them carefully. One thing I do is make sure not to pull the whip off the tree following the wrap.

I probably wouldn’t recommend making a habit of it, especially if the bark is abrasive.
Obviously that will scuff and scrape a leather whip, and as mentioned don’t pull it loose if you do. You could always wrap a blanket, etc around the trunk of the tree to offer some padding though. Also keep in mind, the goal is to crack the whip behind and off to the side of the target, letting it expend its energy and follow through its path to gently wrap around the target.
Good luck.

The sad thing is that I keep on doing wraps when I am just messing about, but when I try to actually do it, ... I just can't!
While trying to swing a whip (that lay on the floor after a forward crack) in front of me, I somehow managed to make an absolutely painless, perfect wrap around my ankle, with a loud SNAP! ... The first time I absent mindedly threw a whip in the direction of a tree, it managed a perfect wrap that made it impossible to untangle... Good thing common sense dawned on me when my first instinct was to imitate Indy and give it a good yank...
But when I roll up my sleeves and get serious, and try to wrap a friend, it begins to resemble the torture scene from ToD...
Ah well, thanks for the advice hollywood and Borton, I'll try whipping maybe a lamp post or something less abrasive in the future, and avoid trying to pull it loose.

I don't do wraps much, but I find trees to be a delightful subject for target practice....I now trim all the trees in my backyard with a whip! It's only effective if you're a pretty good shot....

Don't use friends for target practice!!!
At least not until you've practiced on something that can't feel pain first...
