It was the same question I asked myself when I ordered a Fed IV.
So I read a lot on COW in this tread

For around 100 clams, the Christy's Adventurer looks to be a good buy for the first time hat buyer.

Aeris_Canon show how this hat can look with a "Raiders" Bash here. But it can take a good LC bash as well.

I've been looking into getting one of these as well.
Cheers!

I vote for the Adventurer! It's a great-performing mid-grade hat, at a low-grade hat price! The quality of the felt can only be described as buttery and soft!
The hat is built relatively solidly as well. It also has an excellent sweatband!
So don't touch any Dorfman Pacifics! If it has an "Indiana Jones" pin on it, it will burn your hand!!!

All of the above is good advice. The thought of an open crown might be scary, but it's not really that bad. Plus, there are no good options in your price range that come already bashed and look remotely like an LC hat.

Any of the afore mentioned hats would be great, but the only caveat is that it comes open crown. It may seem a bit scary at first, but you will soon find that putting your own bash into your hat is fun, easy and builds a special bond between you and your hat. Even if you do decide to order a hat that is bashed for you, you will inevitably reshape the hat to satisfy exactly what YOU want it to look like.
Now, if do want to go with a hat that is already bashed, your most inexpensive, but by no means inferior quality, options are Keppler, Camptown and Jimmy Pierce Designs. Unless I forgot someone, these are your best bets. JPD offers a pure rabbit fur at, I think, $160 and is custom made to your specs. Lee and Ken offer blended fur hats that are priced slightly higher (I think Lee's prices have gone up to $175) but have the up-side of being a beaver blend. If you want the hat pre-creased, these are your best choice.

Dave has the right idea there. But there are many tutorials here to glean from so if you went the Christy's route for just around $100 & shape it yourself, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. They're not as hard to shaple as you might think. So many hat fans can't be wrong about this. Camptown's Fieldmaster is around $175 & you can talk to Ken about his shaping options if you really don't want to do it yourself. Most of the hat vendors here are fantastic to chat & work with & you'll get what you're looking for.
Cheers!
