Club Obi Wan

So, I'm thinking about purchasing a whip!
I've narrowed it down to Joseph Strain or Bernardo del Carpio.
Both look like they make great whips.
Anyone have a preference and why?
All help greatly appreciated.

I'd go with Bernardo. Strain makes great whips, but by all accounts, there's no one who can match Bernardo's ability to reproduce the nuances of the whips in the movies. :junior: -M

Well - Bernardo and Joe both make fantastic looking whips. The plusses to each are, besides being very well made, Joe's were in CS somewhere, and Bernardo's can look like any of the other films' whips.

It depends on which movie you want your whip to look like, and how much of a SA stickler you are!

I've read all sorts of threads praising both Joe and Bernardo.
Also anyone have one of Bernardo's 9ft's. These seem really appealing to me. A happy medium between the 8 and 10ft.
Are there really any differences between whip makers. The whips and braiding look a lot alike.

Indy_1971 would you mind to answer a few questions?

Is this your first whip?
Are you looking for SA for costuming purposes?
Are you proficient with a whip, or would you like to be?
Is price an issue?

I am amazed at how many great whip makers and whip performers actively participate in this forum. I think explaining what your expectations in a whip are will help you get the information needed to make your choice.

Boy that can be a tough call. I have an 8' Strain and a 10" delCarpio and they are both great whips. Both guys are both extraordinarily friendly, hard-working and honest (see my thread today on my most recent dealings with Bernardo). Bernardo makes dead-on old school Morgan replicas and can reproduce SA versions of the movie whips. Joe is the famous machine. So consistent with his strands and plaiting that its sometimes hard to believe that his whips are made by human hands.

The good thing is you will be a winner either way you choose. Good luck.

I have several whips from Joe and several from Bernardo. Both makers turn-out a beautiful, high quality product.

My approach to this kind of quandary is, when in doubt buy one of each.

Indy-1971 - I just got my 10' Whiskey Strain a couple of weeks ago and I should be getting my 10' delCarpio in the next week (I just got an email from Bernardo that he was finishing it up and it should be on its way). I have pics posted here of the Strain (I'll try to post the link). Both were ordered as the KotCS style but Joe didn't do the darker knots. I really love his whip. I will post pics of the delCarpio when it arrives.

I have a 9 ft. RAIDERS Replica by Joe Strain and it is amazing!

It handles well and is just now straight to break in since I got it back in late May/early June and I've been cracking it consistently.

I also have a Del Carpio on the way (8 ft. KotCS) and I am eager to compare the work.

However, I can say with confidence you can't go wrong with both! Both whipmakers are also very friendly to converse with via e-mail and will be happy to offer any advise as well.

Of course you might be in for a long wait with both, I'm sure they're packed to the brim.

Bernardo said he was finishing up my whip last week and shipping it out Wednesday, hopefully I'll get it by the end of the week!!!!!!!

He must have been working on yours right before mine - he said mine was going to be shipped on Friday until I reminded him it was a Holiday. So it should ship this week.

I've noticed he's taken the KotCS style whip DOWN from his website. Perhaps he got so clogged with orders for it that he decided to temporarily put a halt on doing that whip till he caught up?

Bernardo, if you're reading this...just for curiousity's sake...why'd you take the KotCS whip down?

You’re going to be happy with either.

Joe has a few more years of whip making under his belt then Bernardo and had some whips supplied to the Crystal Skull set, but pound for pound as Indy Whip makers go they are pretty much on the same quality and performance level. Especially with the whips Bernardo has done in the last year or so, the sets where cut just as precisely, plaited just as tightly and preformed just as well, in my humble opinion. I do think that Bernardo’s are better in terms of screen & Morgan accuracy though. I can tell a Joe Strain Indy bullwhip from a David Morgan Indy bullwhip just from a quick glance, With Bernardo’s I have to look a whole lot closer. With thats said I like both of their whips alot.

Regarding length, I prefer 8ft or 10ft over 9ft, that’s just my personal preference though. I’d probably recommend an 8ft.

Indy_1971 have you made a decision yet? I am curious about which maker you will choose.

I had this decision to make just yesterday, and I chose Bernardo! I really like the way Bernardo's whips look (maybe it's just that Morgan feel they have) and whenever I see a new Bernardo Raiders, I just have to stop and drool for a minute. I especially like the lighter ones (call me crazy for not liking natural tan to be dark!).

But definitely, you can't go wrong either way.

Well I don't *dislike* your whip - I just want one that's lighter than yours. The only whips I've ever had were black, and whiskey. And I've always wanted a natural tan - so I'm going all the way!

I like the lighter tan to, and don't know why sooo many people like the darker tans.

I too am in the middle of this decision
Would somebody with a natural tan Strain & Del Carpio please be kind enough to post pics of each side by side??
