Debating yet another jacket...Need ideas.
Hi All,
I´m torn at the moment. I´ve got two Westeds, a lamb and a goat. Both are fantastic, although I like the goat more because of its perfect fit. But yet I still have an itch to scratch, that being yet another jacket. But I don´t think I want another replica Indy jacket from say G&B or TN necessarily, however well they´re made because frankly I think my Wested would stand up to a lot of abuse. So what are my options? I´ve seen a rather interesting looking "Raiders jacket" on the G&B website as well as "Civilian style" A-2s. I´m just trying to get ideas and that´s why I´m coming to you all. Can you share your thoughts on those jackets if you´ve had some experience with them? What aspects do you like or dislike about them? I would like a leather collar most likely, not mouton wool as in a classic G-1. Are there any other types of decent adventure style jackets out there that you could recommmend and have had experience with or knowledge about? Maybe even a non leather option (natural fibres though)? Just trying to get a sense of the universe of ideas for adventure style jackets. I know this is pretty open ended. Sorry I can´t be much more specific than this. I´m still searching. Thanks.

well if you are looking for an Indy type jacket there are many to choose from. do you want leather or oilcloth, long or short? try theses guys and see what you like: filson, orvis, goodwear, lost worlds, aero. the last three will do custom work, but John at goodwear only does military repros, very excellent repros too.

indgeo, I have 3 leather jackets, and justified each purchase by dividing them by weight, styling and when I would wear each:
-a longer, almost 3/4 length car-coat type FQHH from Aero for colder weather. This longer length allows it to go over other longer clothes underneath, like an overcoat if need be. This jacket is in medium brown.
- a G&B goat Indy for Fall/Spring weather, and since it is shorter, is better suited for jeans and more casual wear. This is in dark brown.
- a black-colored Roots harrington-style jacket that is in between the lengths of the other 2, and is simply a knock-around jacket if I am going to a place (bar, stadium) where I am concerned about getting beer or other detritus on it. This is a medium weight cowhide that fits me well.
You can look at the purchase from a utility perspective: when, where and how will you wear the jacket.
If its simply because you like how one looks on you, think about whether you will feel the same in 3 months.
I have passed up many jacket purchases because while I like how it fits/looks on me, I just didn't think I would be able to find a time to wear it with my other jackets.

Thanks
Thanks to all that gave me some good ideas. BobJones, I like your approach and I think it´s a very sensible one and one that I will apply in my own "quest."
CM, while true my post wasn´t particularly specific to an Indy repro jacket, I think it stays true to the board as I am, in fact, looking for what could be considered an Indy inspired jacket (i.e. one that exudes adventure, style, etc.) As I understand it, the real Indy jackets were inspired by A-2s and maybe other jackets that came before it. So to look for jackets that either inspired the Indy jacket or were inspired BY the Indy jacket simply stretches the bounds a bit. Therefore, I think it´s unfair to say my thread has "nothing to do with" COW. I can´t imagine that all the hundreds of threads on COW speak to nothing but topics like D rings or sliders, X box vs square stitching, and debates about screen accuracy. As support, I´ve seen plenty of posts that speak to topics like alternatives to Alden shoes, nylon whips, and other "not precisely Indy" stuff. My two pence.

My 2 thoughts:
Flightsuits.com has a made-to-order section for their bomber (not Indy) jackets. I'd thought of getting one with a zip-out liner and zipper pocket on the sleeve.
Has anyone gotten one from those guys?
If you browse around the Wested site, they have other jackets besides Indy. I got a Dr Who, which is a really cool jacket, and of Wested's great quality. Just be warned: it looks like a warm jacket. it is not. I actually feel like it delivers the cold to my skin faster than if I wasn't wearing it. Definitely an early-fall jacket.
