Looking for boots

I don't want anything that's exact SA or Alden look a likes, I'm looking for brown boots that have that "classic" look to them and they MUST NOT have any logos on the leather, it seems anytime I find a pair of boots I like they have some type of lettering or logo on the side. Does anyone know of a company or specific pair of boots that have that "old fashioned" yet rugged look?

The Rockport Farnum boots are similar to Aldens but they do not have any exterior logo and are pretty durable. You may want to give them a look.

I just got a pair of Frye Arkansas boots. They may fit your description, although they do have a number (no logo) branded into the leather it is almost not noticeable.
I have had many pairs of Frye boots in the past and they are of exceptional quality. Frye is the oldest shoe maker in the USA, and are still made here.
Teddy Roosevelt and Gen. George Patton wore Fryes and thats good enough for me.
I'm still waiting on my Aldens from Schmidty and if they are half as nice as my Fryes I'll be ecstatic.
Regards,
Travis

I just returned my second pair of these boots. I think these are exactly what you want: basic, uninsulated work boots with the exposed sole stitching and nice, rugged leathr uppers.
Mine were "black cherry" leather. MAN I wish these fit! Only available in medium width; I need narrow. I will get Aldens, you should get these...
Site is Zappos.com, where I bought them. Excellent service by the way...

Rockport Farnums are the best look-alikes in my opinion....strong, durable, lightweight, very comfortable, and inexpensive.....I like them so much I bought a pair in both dark brown and tan!

I'm planning on buying a pair of Alden's from Schmidty but I since I wanted to know what the type of boot would look like I picked up a pair of Farnums today for $70 and some change. If they agree with my I'll probbaly get a pair of the real McCoy's come August.

the redwings look PERFECT but there a bit dark, id rather have something like those just a bit lighter so they darken with time....im thinking of purchasing a pair of WW2 american reproduction boots, they're made "rough out" so the smooth side of the leather is on the inside.

You could go for a current repro version of the US Boondocker roughout boots used before and during WW2.

Ah, but who makes 'em WIDE? I wear a 13EEE with a high instep. Calves the size of beer barrels don't help matters either.

Tony! I didn't know you were on COW too! Howdy!
About boots. I too am on the search for a not necessarily SA, yet classic, brown, comfortable boot with no markings. I've been considering the Red Wing GT, just working myself up to lay down the cash, as I'm on a budget. If anyone wants a pair of these, I have a little tip to save money.
First sign up for Fatwallet.com, you want to anyway, it's free. It'll get you 10% off at Shoebuy.com through November. Use the URL
http://www.shoebuy.com/ent to go to ShoeBuy.com with a special 15% off deal. They're stackable. 15 off the price, then 10 off the total. The GTs are $275 initially, but with all the discounts it gets to about $210 or $215. Free shipping.
Just FYI! PM me for details or if you have any questions, it's a little involved, I know.
I'm curious to see some other suggestions for boots!

I just got my Rockport Farnums yesterday. Wore them to work today and am EXTREMELY happy. I'll post more in the Rockport Farnum thread.

Howdy! Yep, I signed on right after meeting a bunch of COW folks at the Queen Mary last year, and tagging along to Ft. MacArthur. Nice bunch of folks.

I´m loving both the Frye boots AND the RedWing Gentleman Traveler boots... I´m going shoe crazy now. Can someone expound more on their experiences with either of these two? Thanks.

The split down the front of the Farnums is the only thing keeping me from going for them. It sticks out like a sore thumb in my eyes.

Where'd you get this info? I'm curious about this as I have respect for both these men.

I'm the opposite, I guess. I think all the other "close enoughs"
without the moc toe stick out worse than the front seam.
For general (not "close enoughs"), those Red Wing Gent Travelers look
real nice.

The GT's are f'n awesome!
I wish they fit- the correct boots are great (and they come in my size) but the GT's are a similar boot with a better sole for traction, and the color is much nicer in person than that picture looks (on my daylight-calibrated monitor).
I wanted a sturdy, rugged, UNINSULATED boot that would wear in and mold to my foot over time. Also, the ability to rebuild them every few years is a bonus as well.
Like a good wrist watch, it is always cheaper in the long run to buy quality up front...
As I said, I wish they fit me! If you are a normal, or slightly wide width, they will fit great. Break-in will be a bit painful, but well worth it at the end of the day...
