hi all,
I'm having trouble deciding if I want or need a Tony jacket. I just got a wested goat and love it,but looking at the pictures of you guys with your jackets I'm getting the bug. what made you take the plunge and are you really happy or is it just the moment thing. Plus I have to try to convince the warden why I need another jacket, the price is high, so I have to come up with a compelling arguement to say why it's worth buying and having. so what do you all think.

It's a terrific looking jacket; it's built to last; it's a limited edition, and it's the closest thing to a screen accurate looking Indy jacket we have ever had the opportunity to get our hands on.

If you are a "true" COW gearhead, you don't need a reason why you have to have another jacket. .....besides, what better way to spend $700?......who needs food and gas?

yes I'm becomming a true gear head, I just need a little encourgement emphisis on courgement to ask for the funds from the wife.ha ha

I'm not sure what Tony's plans are for the future of this jacket. He may decide that once 777 are made, that's it. He has other projects to work on. The question you have to ask yourself is; Are you OK with not having one? Will you kick yourself later for not picking one up when you had the chance? There is no right or wrong answer to these questions, only personal feelings. Undoubtedly, some of these jackets will end up on EBay or our own Cairo Bazaar for maybe more or less money. Who can say? The ultimate secret of gear collecting is realizing that it's not the gear that's important, it's the Quest... I hope this helps and not hinders your decision.

Well, that said, you also have to decide if it's the 'quest' you're on, or if you're looking for that one, great article that will be a constant companion on your daily 'adventures', rather than an accumulation of items that will be more than likely left in your closet taking up space.

Definitely something to ponder.

Indygear collecting can get real expensive real quick. Personlly when I look to make a new gear purchase, I tend to think how often am I going to use it???? I do not mind paying big bucks for a G&B expedition & Magnoli cloths but I know that these items will be used as more than costume pieces.

I am sure th TN jacket is worth every penny as it priced very close to Magnoli's tailored jackets.

Since you like the second one better, why not sell the first one to jacksdad and help a fellow gearhead out? (I think the guys who are buying 2 or more TN's are gonna deplete Tony's inventory real quick and make it that much harder for anyone later picking up their first one).

That may be what some individuals are trying to do, PSB. I don't think anyone here is doing it, but those outside our group could very well be doing that.

That's pretty much what happened to the limited edition Wings jacket. There were several folks buying multiple jackets to hold back for eBay sales.

Good point Michaelson. I will be selling my US Wings LE soon I think but I will not look to make a profit.

Oh, don't misunderstand me...I'm not against someone making a profit. It was just the fact that it did shut down others from having the opportunity to buy one jacket when so many jackets were snapped up for future resale, that's all.

I have no intentions of ever selling either one of my Nowak jackets. I may really beat the #### out of the one that was pre-distressed, or alter the inscription and give it to my younger brother as a gift. As for depleting Tony's inventory, well the word has been out for some time now. Anyone sitting on the fence has only themselves to blame if Tony sells out all 777 and decides not to make any more. Personally, I hope he really does call it quits after 777.

As for gear collecting in general, Michaelson made a good point, accumulating items that will only take up closet space is a waste of not just the closet space . . . but money. I learned years ago that my Star Wars toy collection was really getting out of hand. I limited it the original trilogy and really called it quits when I realized what Hasbro was up to. I mean how many variations of a Darth Vader figure does one need? With the release of Indy IV, there has been an onslaught on new merchandising. While some of the stuff has been pretty cool, I have resisted the temptation and said no to most of it.

Yeah, at one point I had 8 Indy jackets in my collection (mostly Wested's). Over the past year, I've sold most of them and am now down to only 3--- a Wested Novapelle, A Tony Nowak, and a B&G Goatskin Expo. I've come to realize that as much I like collecting them, it's really a waste to have most of them just taking space and gathering dust in your closet. It feels good to sell the ones you don't wear to someone who will take great enjoyment out of using it. Plus, I have to eat at some point..

I think before anyone buys any luxury type item they need to ask themselves if they can afford it and will it really make them feel satisfied.

I try to buy things because I need them or will really use them. Stuff sitting in a closet makes me feel miserable and tied down. Trust me, I have enough junk to know the feeling too well.

As far as getting something to sell later, well there are much better investments than jackets.

You can actually eat and collect?! I didn't get that memo.

....yes, and I loved them all!......Each one of them was like a "pet" and was painful for me to give 5 of them up.......but they found good homes and good owners. BTW, they are house-broken, too.

...Or people with an awfully large closet and an even larger bank account! Gotta think this person was either buying them to resell or was buying them as gifts. Wonder if they were all different sizes.

While I don't have my Tony Nowak jacket on hand (I had to send mine back for some slight re-tailoring) I can say based on having held it and tried it on that it is an INCREDIBLE product. Extremely high quality leather, a very nice inscription on the inside and very solid construction. If you can afford that type of expenditure, I'd reccomend a TN jacket any day of the week.

And as always, Tony is a pleasure to deal with. A heck of a nice guy and very enjoyable to talk to. :junior: -M

Sure, there's always something else that's more expensive out there and there's always people who can afford it. That's simple supply and demand. But I simply meant that from my POV, I consider them lucky to be able to afford stuff that easily.

To answer the original poster's question, think about it this way.

For the first time in close to two decades are we able to buy an Indiana Jones jacket made using the same machines, by the same hands, with undisputed specs, and in the same year the movie was released.

That chance may likely never come again, and if it does, it may only come once more several years from now!

Basically, it's like getting an Indy jacket from Western Concessionaires back when Raiders was released. It would be like getting a ToD jacket from Cooper back when that came out. Or it would be like getting a LC jacket by Western Concessionaires again when Indy set out on his last crusade!

Basically, this is the closest most of us will ever come to owning a screen-used jacket! Sure you can still get a RotlA now, or a ToD, or even a LC... but the specs have gone through so many distortions, and the machines and people are most likely new blood...

Sure we could sit down and discuss all day about how Nowak's jacket don't move or look like the ones in the movie, but at the end of the day, what you see is what you get. I think some of us have just gotten so disillusioned about the certainty of specs that we deny having a spec-accurate piece of gear even when it's sitting right in front of us...

As Tony seems fond of saying: This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and who knows what will happen in the future? Need I say more?

well after reading all of your ideas, the final say came down to the wife and she said no. We have alot of other projects that need to be attented to and with having a goat wested I 'm pretty happy.would I have liked to get a Tony, oh yea in a heart beat,but common sence and real life prevailed this time. so I will have to wait. I will have regrets if he stops making them, but ebay,and cario bizzare are always options later. thanks for the help guys,I'll talk to you more in the posts.

Frankly I think it's a bit unfair that SHE gets to decide what YOU buy, especially when she most likely has final say on the things she buys as well, but it's really not my business. I'm sorry to hear that you won't be able to get a TN jacket, especially since it's clear you really wanted one. Is there any way you could start a slush fund for the jacket? If you could put some money back for the jacket, there might be a chance there would still be one available.

I've said this before (and I'm not saying my way is THE way), but I really like the system my wife and I worked out. We both get 2 checks a month. We both put one check in a joint account for household expenditures and each have a separate account for personal bills (credit cards and things of that nature). This way if I want something, it comes down to whether or not I've got the money for it. I don't have to ask and don't have to resent if I'm told no. If she wants to go buy 200 pairs of shoes, it doesn't effect me or the house at all.

Now in my case, the TN bug is beginning to bite me hard as well. I'm having to take a hard look at my finances to see if I can comfortably get one, so I'm in the same indecisive boat as well.

Not trying to hijack the thread but, heaven help me, I think I've broken. I'm going to go take my measurements again and give Tony a call. I keep thinking how I regret it if I don't jump on this.
