Maybe this is posted somewhere, but for the wizards here like _, Platon, Michaelson, etc., can you guys set up a sticky thread with pictures of someone wearing an Indy that fits them very well, as the model to use when trying on a potential jacket purchase?

Yes, the different movie jackets had slightly different styles, like the CS was a baggier, longer fit, but I think there is a difference between between different stylistic elements and a sloppy, incorrect fit.

In another thread, I think Rick had it right on; polite COWers will not want to hurt someone's feelings and will provide fawning comments rather than actually stating someone's jacket just fits wrong - like the back is just too wide, etc. These would be the case regardless of the style, sometimes the person' just bought the wrong size.

Anyway, my point is to request of the experts if they can post pictures of jackets that truly, correctly fit a person as they should, so that when a newb like me is trying out a $500 jacket shipped 3,000 miles, and will cost alot to send back, we will have a solid guide of elements to watch out for.

Any thoughts on this?

Well BJ, my thoughts are that this would be very subjective and that people's hight and build varies so much and personal opinion does too. Platon's idea of a good fit might not be Pattersons, etc.

The best you can do is get screen captures of each jacket in each film to show sizing and fit. Again - these appear to change from scene to scene, and if you're not the same build as Ford - it's kind of irrelevant.

I assume what you're asking for is a reference page with how the jackets look like on FORD for each of the movie, so that potential jacket owners can look at how it fits him and adjust their jacket measurements accordingly?

If so, the best advice I can give is to go to the main Indygear.com site, or theraider.net, and go over either the jacket section or the screenshots. Alternatively, you could look up age old arguments like this thread for example:

...and decide for yourself which side of the fence you like better!

Not trying to be rude to anyone, per se, I just think that critiquing the way someone looks in their gear as opposed to how the gear looks is ignorant and a dangerous, slippery slope.

I think bobjones asked a fair question, and more to the point, he simply wants to know how to get gear to look just right for the movie of his choosing. I would hate for him (or anyone else for that matter) to go get a piece of gear that looks great on its own, but just looks too big or too small on the owner!

Ohm I wasn't aiming anything at him - I agree that sinking some money into something only to find you're unhappy with the fit is a real drag.

I just wanted to point out that the reason we don't often critique the way someone looks in their gear is because that wasn't the foundation or spirit upon which this site was built.

I disagree. We as a group are CONTANTLY critiquing the way someone looks in their gear. That is if by “critique” we are both referring to a detailed evaluation. Most just do not always honestly critique the gear.

I think most people have a good idea how their jacket looks when they look in the mirror. How many times have you heard “is this jacket too big/small/long/short?” People have trouble admitting to themselves what they are seeing with their own eyes, so they ask opinions for reassurance. Nobody is not doing them any favors by misleading them.

How can anybody base the judgment of a jacket or hat on anything other than the item being worn? You can do that while it is hanging on a hanger at the store. A fantastic looking jacket that is way too baggy for the owner will in no way be complimentary. You can say what a great jacket it is (compliment the gear), but what real value will it have to the owner if it looks preposterous while being worn?

The original poster has an excellent idea. Short of simply looking at screencaps of Harrison Ford, maybe there should be a thread that shows the best looking jackets (with measurements) on various body types so that everyone is represented properly. It could save a lot of mistakes when ordering.

Let me clarify; I wasn't so much looking for how the jackets fit on Ford, since as was pointed out, few of us (at least those of us geezers over 40) have his build, but how the "Indy" jacket should look on a person.

I was suggesting this because for example, a Veste De Rallye from Aero is suppose to look big on people, and it should be "bulgy in spots so as to fit a suit or heavy clothes underneath.

On the other hand, a 40s A-2 was a slim-fitting jacket, to be snug and not leave bulges or rolls when zipped up, with the shoulder width in the back in alignment with the person's shoulder blades.

By giving the newbs a guide to follow on what the jacket shouldlook like on a person, it will allow people like myself, upon receiving the jacket, what telltale items to look for that would indicate the jacket may for example, have the right arm length, but is too baggy around the waist.

Is this somewhat subjective? Sure but at my height and weight for instance, I'm right in-between a regular and a long from G&B, and while I know how a suit should fit me, and certain styles of leather jacket, an Indy is its own animal, and a guide could give me some points to consider.

To the poster above, I guess you can consider this as "fashion" advice to an extent, but unfortunately, I only saw Tyra in passing in a restaurant, and while I found her assets to be rather appealing, I doubt she would stop to take the time to analyze my attire for fit. Maybe I should try to get on that show of hers...

One suggestion that I would recommend is to have a hidden "press stud" installed at the bottom of the storm flap of the jacket. The storm flap will not be open all the time.

Well, yes, unfortunately it still is in my opinion.

It's a difficult call what something's supposed to look 'right' on an indivdiual who weighs, say, over 200 pounds and has a body shape of a pear, when the actual jacket was tailored for a buff actor in his mid 30's who has the build of a man who goes to the gym with a trainer every other day. To have it fit properly in the chest, it will be too snug around the stomach and difficult to zip (if at all). If sized to fit comfortably around the stomach, it will be loose around the chest and the shoulders will sag. If difference is split, and the cuffs are the right length, it will look right on YOU....but it will NOT be screen accurate by any stretch of the imagination.

So, yes....'subjective' is the right descriptor.

Oh, and I was using my body as the example.

I wear jackets size 42 (english size)...
So I ordered a Wested jacket size 42...
You know what? It fits!

Not at all, I had doubts before ordering my wested goat jacket .
I followed the instructions I found on the site, something like "try several jackets with differant sizes", If the X fits the best, then order the X size.

This is what I did, it works.
