How much does the length of the cracker directly correlate to the length/taper of the fall? I noticed a big difference when I had to clip just less than 1/4 in. from the damaged fall and put the same cracker back on. It wasn't nearly as loud. Is there an easy way to find that magic combination for a loud easy crack??

A few questions:

Did you use a different knot to tie on the cracker? Is the fuzz on the end of the cracker shorter than it used to be?

A bigger knot might quiet the whip down, so would a smaller length of fuzz.

Sometimes if I'm working with a short fall, I like to put on a longer cracker to make up the difference in length.

Thanks Adam. I've fumbled around with this in the past with hit and miss results. It makes me wonder how exacting the ratio needs to be. I guess that's where some of the art lies when a pro makes a bullwhip.

I've changed my fall twice since I got my roo from Joe Strain in December, and sometimes had difficulty getting it to crack the same way as when I first got it, until I started playing with the length of the cracker, knot, etc. Joe's came with a kind of doubled back knot in the fall, which I guess adds weight when the hairpin is terminating as it cracks.
Sometimes, as the fall had to be trimmed up, I had better luck not using that knot, and just tying the cracker on with the fall being straight as it led to the cracker. Verrrrrrry interesting.....
