Bag price vs bag value

I hope it's ok to post completed ebay auctions, I'd like to solicit opinions on the prices of MkVII bags

In my price comparison search online, of course I checked ebay's listings, to see what the market value of an original VII bag was. I was very surprised by the variance of the prices, for bags with and without a leather strap.. perhaps some of you have more experience in the market, I only just decided to stop carrying this reusable grocery bag back and forth to work last week.

Leather strap attached - this one fetched a remarkable price - $231.50

Leather strap - $202.50

MkVI with no leather strap - $127.50
Do the VI's command a higher price?

$305 for this one!!

$177.50 for this one, no leather strap

I just don't understand, especially that last one. Is there a certain manufacturer of these that commands a higher price? I just bought an original MkVII from WPG for $45, and wonder why anyone on ebay in their right mind would pay $177 for a bag that seems to be exactly like what I just bought.. add a $25 Todd's strap, and the price jumps another $50 or more?

I must be missing something.. there's more out there on ebay, these examples are just from the past week!

I don't geddit

Movie hype high? Lack of research? Ease of eBay?

Good Lord. maybe time to sell one of my numerous spares!

There must be some seriously uninformed people out there to fork over that kind of cash.

No kidding!!

I'm almost tempted to just buy a bunch of bags & straps from usual sources, put them together, and slap them up on Ebay to see if I can put a few hundred bucks in my pocket!

no doubt! For the cost of a bag and strap from the normal suppliers (let's say $70, that's what I paid), you could flip it and almost afford a new jacket from Wested, or two Fed IVs after shipping!

I know what you mean, but you'll be profiteering off fellow gearheads, and new inexperienced ones too, that can't be condoned.

and here I paid 49.99 for an original WWII version. Glad I got it before the movie came out!

I think I paid $10 for mine around 1998, for WWII reenacting. Dern costumers raising the price of militaria... ;)

You're doing it the smart way. Decide what you're looking for, watch the market and figure out what is or is not a bargain. Once in a while you'll realize that you passed on the steal of the century while you were researching, but that's generally to be preferred to a case of buyer's remorse.

Making money from the new fans? It improves the breed. The smart ones will come here to sit at the feet of the masters and watch them debate about buckles, shoe laces, leather dressings, how to get distressed, and the art of the bash. They will learn and choose well. They will wonder how so many bank robbers go uncaught as they add up what has been laid out on gear. Those who have chosen badly will have their wounds salved, their prejudices/preferences tested and end up staying for the people.
