Indiana Joe wrote:Attached you will find three pictures that will help contrast Flightsuits' post-mod seal chrome goat Expedition and pre-mod seal deerskin Expedition. The deer is on the right hand side of each photo and has special-ordered scalloped pockets so the only visual difference should be the pocket placement, the more distinct pebble grain of the deer, and the variation of the color seal. Again, the deer is on the right hand side of each photo and appears lighter in most of the pictures.

Oh, man....
Now that is quite a bit of difference between those two leather colors. Wow....what a huge difference.
Oh, Joe....that's it man. Send me my jacket back! Or better yet, what's your address, I'm coming to get it! I'm definately going to keep that jacket....
THAT solves THAT problem too!

Oh no...
Now I get to show off some of my FS Expedition knowledge...
SEAL is a shade of brown that the jackets come in as far as color.
CHROME refers to how the leather was tanned.
Oh yeah....now I'm getting the hang of it!

It used to be referred to as either chrome tanned, or vegetable tanned goat as your choices. The vegetable tanned goat was then referred to as 'seal brown', and has remained described as such. Chrome tanned was always the dark brown. At least that's how it started when the Expedition first came out. Regards. Michaelson

A thousand thanks to Pyr for posting these pix for me!
For the record, all of these photos were taken within a 10 minute time span, on a very overcast afternoon. The top two are interior shots, one with and one without a flash. The rest are the outside photos taken w/ different camera settings and, of course, with and without flash.
It amazes me that "seal" from the same vendor, Flightsuits, will look different on the same line of Expedition jackets. The two most apparent differences are 1) post-mod chrome-tanned goat and 2) pre-mod (veg-tanned?) deer. Obviously, the mods are not affecting the seal color variation.
The skin may affect the dye or perhaps it was a different process of dyeing? Maybe even a different dye from a different company used (obviously) at a different point on the timeline (pre- versus post- modifications timing). Anyone with insight please chime in!

Leather dying is not an exact science. FS is also getting it's leathers from different sources. Their leather is tanned and died to their specs, but the hides are not going to come out identical, especially when its coming from different vendors. I have two G-1's from them, both in dark brown leather. There is a very slight difference in shade between them even though the leather came from the same vendor presumably. You'd only notice if you were specifically looking. However, when a digital picture (with a flash) is taken of the two together, they look like they're two completely different shades, which they are not. The Queen Mary is going to be great for those that want to compare colors. CheersIndiana Joe wrote:
