I've been looking to buy a fedora and was thinking about maybe I could give it a shot and make my own. On a scale of 1-10 being a novice, what am I looking at in terms of difficulty and getting it right on the first attempt. I'm pretty good with tools, fixing cars and electrical work so where does hat making fall in?

It's not difficult at all, but it's a manual labor and you will get frustrated first time. The biggest b**ch is sowing on the ribbon & sweatband. But I say do it.

The first batch will not be as good as you would hope. It is labor intense and to do it right it will cost a bit.

I was pleased with my first attempt at making a hat, but there is a lot of trial and error. I basically "made" the hat 3 or 4 times before I actually deemed it finished.

I'm still re-working my first three now about a dozen times or so just to work out the little details.
