Gloves to wear when cracking?

Alright so I have most of the safety gear I feel is necessary for me when my whip finally arrives (leather jacket, goggles, ear plugs, and a hardhat) but what I don't have is a pair of gloves. Do you reccomend that I wear a pair? If so does anyone know of a good pair to get that won't break the bank. Also what kind is best to use? I'm assuming the leather work glove type but any other suggestions from experience? Thanks!

Hearing what you wear when cracking, now I fell nervous. I usually just go out with a pair of sunglasses and some gloves.

I just use my generic brown leather Indy gloves. They work fine for me!

I haven't gone out yet, I just thought from what I read on the forum you need to wear protection. I guess I can decide what needs to go once I start cracking. I just don't want to get hurt. I think gloves is a good idea though to prevent blisters.

Wouldn't the 1130s work fine for whip cracking?
It'd help break them in, too. :)

Since the question seems to emphasize the gloves, I'd say just spend the 9.99 and get the 1130s. Why get two different pairs of gloves when you can have one that'll do the job?

That's what I wore--my 1130s. I wore the jacket and gloves--even the boots--thinking I'd be protected and then I knicked my right calf :o . There was nothing I could have done for that since I was wearing pants/trousers.

I just wear my Raiders gloves, actually I only wear one on my right hand. Does anyone else have the problem of the wrist loop hitting you when you crack? I always have to use it to stop it from doing that.

Josh, I never really have that problem. But whenever I do, I do the same thing. Just use it.

So much for safety when cracking for me! I usually don't wear anything more than a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and some docksiders on my feet when I am practicing. But then again, I have been doing it for nearly ten years and I really don't hit myself anymore. However, those of you just starting out would be well advised to wear good protective clothing, specifically pants, a heavy shirt or jacket, a wide brimmed hat (gee, i wonder what kind of wide-brimmed hat we could get?) a pair of glasses, and at least an ear plug on the side that you crack the whip (right side, right ear plug). Hope this helps and have fun with your new hobby.

I'm suddenly a huge fan of the Wells Lamont gloves. I've been wearing the same pair off and on for the past 3 days. The Mid-West gloves didn't fit correctly. These are perfect.

Highly recomended... Best gloves I've ever owned in 20... aw, forget it. The joke is too tired already.

I have never been hit in the hand. Back of head and legs all the time but never the hands.

Never worn gloves when cracking, does Indy?

I think the gloves serve more as protection of blisters rather than to protect from a hit.

Oh yea, the blisters can be PAINFULL!!!!

Especially a couple days later.

I just remembered we have a pair of Wells Lamont gloves out in the garage at my mom's house. I've got spring break in a week so I'm heading home to snatch them. :D

I use the same gloves as I use when I'm shooting CAS. The gloves are very thin and they don't protect my hands from bruises and stuff but they keep my skin from coming apart. A bit like motorcycle suit is there just to keep your body in one piece but doesn't keep your bones from breaking...

I gotta admit, my hands have been one part of the body I've NEVER hit with a whip. Either I'm doing something right, or I've been VERY lucky. I vote for the second myself. Regards. Michaelson

(sorry if somebody's already mentioned these, I'm just too #### lazy to read it all! :P)

First thing you need: Whip Cracking made easy, that's your biggest saftey prevention.

Second: Eye and hearing protection,

And most importantly: NEVER WEAR YOUR HAT WHEN YOUR STARTING OUT! You could demolish it in a singal stroke... :?

Hope this helps!

I'll have to disagree with this one point as I would rather demolish my hat than my ears or face. LOL...hats are replaceable, skin on the otherhand...

I think he just meant not to use your best hat, not necessarily to not wear a hat at all.

You're right brady, my mistake. Wear a hat, just not your best Indy hat! :D :P
