How long to make a whip?

For a high quality whip made by a skilled craftsman, how long does it take to make, say, a 10 foot whip? I imagine this question has been asked somewhere, but I can´t seem to locate it at the moment. Thanks.

A couple of day is most likely but if you are learning try not to think of how much time it takes. Think about how you can learn and perfect the craft.

Not looking to make one...yet

Bending Oak,
No, I´m not learning at the moment. But if I were to learn and make one, I´m sure I´d enjoy the process and take my time about it. I once made a rather large telescope mirror and I loved the process and took my sweet time with it. It turned out great and I´ve enjoyed the scope itself for years.

As I find out the costs of a whip and how long it takes to make one I realise the "value" perhaps that a great quality whip really is. In any case, it´s an interesting artform and funtional form for sure.

As a rule of thumb, the typical whip is 1.5-2 hours per foot, on average...The more you braid, the faster you get...

I think if working full time I could do one in 2 days. However, I don't do it full time and it's more like 2 weeks for me :) I'm sure a full time whip maker is a lot faster than I am, not to mention better. I use to make nylon whips in a weekend with no problem. Leather takes me a lot longer.

A full day then about 3/4 hours the next day.....

In nylon about 4 hours start to finish.....

For 6 and 8 foot bullwhips it takes me about an hour per for to make. So a 6 foot start to finish is about 6 hours (excluding time to make falls and crackers).

The last time I did a 10 foot took a bit longer than an hour a foot. I think that's because all the little distractions like answering the phone, etc add up more over the longer period.

I may be starting a 10 foot this afternoon or tomorrow, it I remember I'll try to time myself.
