Pouncing a hat?

I had a couple of questions about pouncing.
1. What is the correct technique?
2. Does it lighten the color of the hat?
Thanks,
Phil

First, pounce by hand unless you have a lath to spin the hat. Pounce counter clockwise. Use nothing larger than 220 grit(lower the grit number, the coarser the grit), and if the hat has already been pounced, use 400 grit and up. You don't want to tear the felts surface, you want to smooth it out with sand paper so the surface is even in nap.
Pouncing can lighten up colors. I used this along with defracturnated coconut oil to match up my and Marc's colors for the film hats. Fedora

Thanks Steve, how can I tell when I should switch to a finer grit paper.

Also should I use a sanding block?

Or you could light it on fire.
Not kidding.
I haven't done it to my AB, as I have a weak stomach. But on one of my lesser fedoras I have sprayed on some rubbing alcohol and lit that sucker up. Did the trick as that particular hat was getting a bit fuzzy.

I've set fire to a wool beret a couple times. Okay, maybe "set fire" is a bit extreme, but I did take my lucky charm zippo to it a few times to singe off the fuzzies. It was very effective. I haven't tried it on any fedoras, however. I guess as long as you're careful, there's no reason it shouldn't work. I'd be extra careful around the sweat and ribbon, however. In fact, it might be something best left for a reblock, once the hat is completely taken apart.

I keep my hats on a hat rack, otherwise, I would have a large orange and white cat "pouncing" all over the hats!!
