can we see the bow?

looks like a federation.

The ribbon's riding up a bit high in the front on this pic, so the crown might be appearing a bit shorter than it really is. This is also a mirror shot that has been un-mirrored and this picture was taken with a camera phone, so there's probably a bit of distortion going on.

As an extra clue...or not, the front pinch height comes in at 4.5".

Haha, honestly, the profile pic's probably not going to help much actually. Then again, we are just talking about trying to identify a hat based off of pictures alone.

I'll also note that I'm doing more work on the brim cuz it's a bit too droopy. It's taken a bit of a beating and needs more stiffener.

OK, after looking at the bow and the brim. I would say you did it.

Haha, the BCF reblock then that's the correct answer actually.

It used to be a highly tapered 15 buck BCF at with a 1.25" ribbon that I replaced with cheap black 1.5" ribbon. I would have done brown, but it was #### trying to find good brown ribbon that was the right brown. If you look closely on the ribbon, there's no stitching because I used liquid stitch.

That's probably not even the most unique thing about it though. The way I reblocked it was probably more interesting. Currently the hat is in its 4th reblocking, and I think it's the one that has worked the best.

Originally I reblocked it over my old Akubra Federation 4 years ago with saran wrap over it. This helped it take a lot more of a classic Indy look instantly, but as well all know now, the Fed block was not perfect either.

My second attempt last year utilized a plastic container and a big wad of paper towels molded over it into the shape of a dome. This helped create a much less tapered hat, but it was a bit on the narrow side for my round oval head and a bit uneven.

My 3rd and 4th attempts were done off of my vintage Mr. Disney (not to be confused with a DP) fedora which has a great non tapered block with not too much dome. The 3rd try created good results but it still didn't address my round oval head with tends to cause non tapered hats to taper, so I used the same method again, but with some changes. This time I reblocked the hat over the Mr. Disney hat but did it way off center as sort of an in built turn so that the BCF would be wider.

I guess BendingOak also got the right answer too if you consider this as an almost completely rebuilt hat, as I pretty much just used the BCF as a hat body more or less.

That's awfully neat. Those BCFs ( Huckel ? ) are pretty resilliant. I have one I've worn off and on for about 6 yrs, and they obviously stand up to a decent amout of experimentation. Mine doesn't look half as cool as yours does now, but it's just about the perfect hat for doing something "stupid" in (ie., jumping in a river just to see what will happen ) due to the price. Did you always intend it to be an Indy hat, or are there any other plans?

I actually bought 2 of these about 5 years ago for the sole purpose of Indy hat experimentation. This was when turning the hat was still mostly just a theory, but I had taken a lot of stock into it then. One of the hats I totally turned 90 degrees and changed the ribbon around according, but this created a very exaggerated hat. The second one I did a utilized a little more conservatively, but it took a couple of years of on and off work to find a way to make this hat into something that I feel captures the spirit of the Raiders hat without being too exaggerated.

I also just liked the challenge of taking a hat that didn't look like an Indy hat and totally transforming it.
