Taking a whip out of storage

Post by Repairman Jack »

Hey folks,
It's been over a year since I've had the chance to take my Stenhouse out, and even longer since I've gotten to do any serious practice with it. Does anyone have any tips on the kind of Pecarding routine I should put it through before I start putting it through its paces again?

Best,
RJ

A modest application: rub in and buff should be sufficient.
Check the fall to insure that it has not dried-out, perhaps cracked.

White hide dries out FAST..so do what Boggstandard does...Check your fall...Check it often...(hey, did Wilfred Brimley ever use a whip in any of the million westerns he was in? Just curious..)

Here's my advice,

Put a glop of Pecards into your palm, spread it around in your hand like lotion, and then REALLY work it into the fall until it's good and supple.

Whatever's left over on your hand, work into the lower length of the thong with your hand. This serves two purposes. You're REALLY working the Pecards in, and you're also closely inspecting the thong for kinks, damage to the leather, etc. etc.

Let both the fall and the thong sit there with the Pecards on it for a few minutes, and then wipe off what hasn't soaked in with a clean, lint-free cloth.

I'd then take the whip out, and give it a couple light circus cracks before really giving the whip or yourself a workout, just to see if storage has caused any kinks to develop in the thong. If there's kinks in it, and you try to throw normally, the whip can veer off in odd directions and bite you.

If there are any kinks there, they shouldn't take more than a few solid, (not hard,) cracks to work them out, (and this is really doubtful, as it's only been a year, and Paul builds his bullwhips like tanks! Rugged, accurate, and reliable as can be.)

Then, you should be set for a whole new season of whip cracking.

All the best!
