Removing Bound Edge

Hey guys,

Just ordered a new Fedora, Akubra Whippet, and it comes with a bound edge. Was wondering if it was possible to remove that or if it will leave holes around the brim because I like the unbound look.

Cheers,

Steve

You can remove the bound edge, but it will leave holes. If it's a new hat, they might go away in time, but I couldn't say for sure. Another option would be to just cut off the edge of the brim with sharp scissors and a steady hand. It would make the brim look significantly shorter, though. Honestly, if it's a raw edge you like, I suggest you just buy a raw edge hat.

i have removed the bound edge from a number of hats and they always come out fine. the holes are barely noticable if at all. I would be much more wary o cutting the brim as you can't uncut it. Bound edge is easy to remove and no big deal

The bound edge actually helps the brim keep it's shape. Leave it. IMHO

Thanks to this thread I was able to remove the binding on my wool knock off hat and widen the brim. It did, however, make the hat "floppy" but a few hours working with heavy starch and an iron made all the difference. Not a stitch hole can be seen on it either. Thanks for the confidence
