Grey-Scale Indy?

Post by Zach R. »

I did some cursory searching and found some posts about an Expo in black, and DanielJones mentioned something about having a Wested TOD in black, but I couldn't find much else.

After owning my hybrid(tod/lc) Wested for almost 3 years now, I'm looking to expand my collection a little bit. First up is either a novapelle or an Expo, but I'm definitely interested in looking for a black jacket so I can match it with the rest of my clothes.

Does anyone know what hides Peter has in black, if they would be available for an indy jacket, or any experiences regarding them?

I have a black Wested Raiders jacket in cowhide. It looks and fits great! Looks almost like a Indy-motorcycle jacket. Definately recommended for anyone considering a unique Indy jacket.

That G&B is gorgeous, I assume that the fee you are talking about is their standard $100 one?

I'd love to see some pics of that black cowhide...hopefully I can make my decision by the end of the summer so my jacket will be here by the time it gets chilly.

Maybe we can start some sort of bizarro indy fashion style where everything is shades of gray and black rather than tan and brown.

Actually, I believe someone here posted pics of a "grayscale Indy" a few years back.
And, IIRC, the gearhead pioneers wore black jackets, based on the fact that the jacket in RotLA does look black (especially in dodgy VHS).

That would have been Rabbit that posted that gray-scale Jones gear.

I've often wondered what the Minority Report jacket would look like in brown, and with a fedora. I hope to get one some day. (Providing that my wife is still lurking here and keeping tabs on me...)

If you're talking about Wested's 'Minority Report' inspired jacket, then look no further... I got one of theirs in brown, although it just doesn't look right with a fedora... :(

Now a motorbike on the other hand... :D

As I have mentioned on this board before, I have an ROTLA Wested in black goat skin...added the press studs, ala LC, but other then that it is a black 'Raider's' jacket! I love it -- great with ROTLA Grey fedora, and black Alden's! Just -- a great 'change up' from the norm! W>

Well, I would still like to see what you look like it with a Fedora and I think that would have to be the last jacket for me for a long time if I ever got one.

Brown goat? I think that would be sharp.

I know I'm new here, but I'm pretty sure the jacket in TOD was black. If you look closely you can see it was. Check it out in TOD. So you'd still have a screen accurate jacket in black.

No, the TOD jacket was not black.

Check this out:

That jacket is as brown as you can get.

Black Jacket

Post by YARVTON »

Brown Fedoras and Black Jackets don't mix. What color Fedora do you see in TOD?

I like the Jacket in Black. But it has nothing to do with Screen Accuracy -- only Personal Taste.

I know this is an old topic, but did anyone ever actually do a full grey-scale Indy?

I ended up buying a suit from Magnoli instead (that unfortunately doesn't fit me any longer since I've lost a significant amount of weight).

I'm working on one right now. I have a US Wings black goatskin jacket and a gray AB. Still tron between black pants & gray shirt, or gray pants and white shirt. :-k I don't have the budget to get screen accurate full gear, but I can get close enoughs just fine. Except the holster, whip, and bag.

Because it's not the jacket that made the hero . That's why HF is still Indy with a POS on his back or a tapered fedora
on his head . ;)

I'm more of a close enough guy when it comes to shirts and pants and shoes. I do own a gray CS AB and I would like to own an "indy-style" black or gray-scale jacket. I don' think I'd need the whip and holster since I don't always carry them around.

I'm more interested in the everyday gear. What are the thoughts on a MKVII with black strap with the gray-scale outfit? Or would a different bag, or custom repro in a gray canvas be more appropriate?

My MKVII has a black strap. I had it custom made and I think it looks fine, both with the full gear and with regular street clothes.

However, for a grey-scale Indy I think the khaki/green MKVII would stick out. It works with the other earth-tones, but not with greys.

If you want to go 'old school' Indygear, it was originally believed the TofD strap was black, so there's provenance with that practice.

Wrong, that's true, but at least a history to go with it. ;)

I had completely forgotten about this, but when I was getting my Tony Nowak, Tony sent me a sizing Jacket in grey.
I know its not black like you asked, but I thought I would post this pic:

I think it's a handsome looking jacket as well. If Tony were still around I might order one.

Nicholas

That is actually a SWEET looking jacket! Me like! Guess it went back to Tony huh? I think I like that better than a black one! Now I just need someone to make it for me!

I've got a repro MXVI that is a mustard/desert tan. I think I'm going to start using a vintage MKVII and experiment with dyeing that repro cause I won't care as much about it. Maybe I'll try for a charcoal gray color and then get a Wade's black strap... :-k

I wonder if this thread should be in the general gear section or something. Its not just about the jacket, at least not now... Oh well, I can always start a new thread when I get going.

Yes that little beauty eventually made it's way back to Tony. As glad as I am that he just sent me a sizing jacket, I really wish I had made the time to go see him and shake his hand in person.
Even the sizing jacket was perfect, and it was totally affected by it's environment. Varied from shades of almost light navy blue to light grey depending on the lighting. Interesting.

Levi's 559?

Anyway I like it but something about black leather always feels missing. Brown seems to always have so much more color and character to it..
