Club Obi Wan

Man, I'm enjoying my new AB Deluxe. I've had it exactly a week and it's already a habit.

Perhaps this has been covered in a "Sticky" and I overlooked it....but do you use a brush to keep it free from lint, dust, etc? If so, what kind of brush do you recommend?

You can get a good hat brush from Todds Costumes. Also, my mother once worked in a clothing store and told me they used to clean dust and lint off their hats with tape.

I'm pretty sure you just brush the felt in a circular motion...
Works pretty good!

The problem with using tape is that it pulls up all the hairs on the hat, and makes it look like a ball of fuzz.

That's never happened to me, in fact tape has seemed safer to use than some brushes. I guess if the adhesive is too strong the tape could disturb the nap, however.

Regular packing tape wrapped around the hand works well for me, but it does get dull and needs to be replaced pretty quickly. I thing you can also buy rolls of tape with handles on them for the specific purpose of cleaning clothes, but I'm not sure where to get them.

You can also get hat brushes at most western wear stores.

There are also two different types of brushes. One is a short bristled slightly curved brush for the brim. There is also one with longer bristles that looks like a paint brush for the crown.

You brush a hat with the grain of the felt. If you are holding the hat looking down on the top of the crown, you brush around the hat in a counter clockwise direction. To brush the under side of the brim, with the hat turned upside down, looking down into the hat, you would brush the crown in a clockwise direction. This is actually the same direction in relation to the felt, it is just on the other side of the brim.

They also have light colored bristles and dark colored bristles. The light bristles are for light colored hats and the dark bristles are for dark colored hats.

A cheap sticky roller (self adhesive) lint remover works wonders for me removing both dust and my cat’s hair from my fedoras without harming the felt.
